referees
one of the things I dislike most in a sporting event is when the refs have an impact on the outcome. Sometimes the refs interject thier will and or opinion into the arena, instead of just monitoring the action and enforcing the rules. I guess I just like for the contest to be decided by the participants as they are.

Pete Rosell agrees with you. When he was the Commissioner of the NFL, I knew a guy who's brother-in-law was an NFL ref. He said when his brother-in-law finally got to officiate his first game he was so proud of himself he just about popped his buttons.
The Monday after the game he got a call that Rosell wanted to see him in his office. He knew he didn't miss an infraction and he called them all. He was pretty sure Rosell wanted to congratulate him and maybe give him a letter of commendation.
When he got to Rosell's office, Rosell told him there were several thousand people in the stands who had paid good money to see a football game. He wasn't part of the game and nobody wanted to see him. Rosell wanted to see a football game with seven shadows on and around the field.
Football has changed a lot since then. Not necessarily for the better, in my opinion.0 -
Especially in the NFL with parity, officials can have WAY to much influence on the outcome, a penalty is a penalty but we have seen some ticky tack calls in big games {the Steelers can thank the refs in large part for there 5th SB ring against the Seahawks, Seattle got hosed that day} and several New England games turned in the Pat's favour this year with iffy calls. The teams are so close in talent that 1 or 2 plays can decide the game and if you get just 1 biased or overzellous official the game can change on 1 call. 0 -

James I went in a bank one time and was being my usual clownish self and the teller was NOT responding. Completely unwilling to smile and react to my attempts to brighten her day.
At the end of the transaction, I said "sorry ma'am, sometimes I think I'm funnier then I am." She said "I guess this is one of those times"
My referee analogy was in response to what I see as the (referees)moderators involvement in the game (forum)
We have a tremendous opportunity here on GB to learn about the way people that own guns think. We, as gun owners, should listen carefully to what WE are saying, not so much as the non owners are saying about us.
Personally, I think the problems we face are a result of our image rather than what we are and the way we conduct discussions here on GB are a perfect indicator of why our image is that of a bunch of narrow minded individualuists.
anyway, I did enjoy the story about Rozelle. He, IMHO, is responsible fopr the success of football and a great man.
I'll conclude with a referee story: (I am starting to remind myself of ZippyZappy)
I was coaching a game once and the scoreboard clock went on the fritz. The referees were keeping the clock on the field and the game was close. As the side judge ran by I asked him: "how much time left?"
"1:30"
"how many timeouts do I have"
"1"
"what's the square root of 347"
"18.628"
This stunned me.
After the game he comes running up to me and goes: "I am so sorry I screwed up that call."
"What call?"
"It's + or - 347"
