New Senate Bill to Require Background Checks at Gun Shows
No background check, no gun, no excuses.

Virginia Tech survivor Lily Habtu joins Senators Lautenberg (NJ) and Reed (RI) at press conference to announce new Senate bill aimed at closing the gun show loophole.
We started this year with a huge victory - thanks to you and our many allies - with a new law that will strengthen the Brady criminal background check system!
Now we need to keep up the momentum and take the next logical step: make sure that everyone who wants to buy a gun gets a background check.
Earlier today, Senator Lautenberg (NJ) introduced legislation that will keep criminals and other dangerous people from buying and selling guns without Brady criminal background checks at gun shows.
Gun shows should not be a haven for convicted felons, domestic violence abusers, or someone who is dangerously mentally ill who wants to evade a background check. Letting criminals and other prohibited purchasers get away with buying guns at gun shows is at odds with common sense, and recklessly puts lives at risk. We believe the law should be "no background check, no gun, no excuses."

Whether they are called gun shows, flea markets, or swap meets, there are thousands of events every year in our local communities where unlicensed individuals can sell firearms without doing background checks. (Federally-licensed firearm dealers at the same event are required to conduct Brady criminal background checks.)
People prohibited from buying or possessing guns seek out these unlicensed sellers, because they know that they can simply put down their money and walk away with deadly weapons.
Law-abiding gun buyers and sellers have nothing to fear from background checks. Only criminals and corrupt sellers do. Allowing dangerous people to buy guns at gun shows from unlicensed sellers without a background check threatens the safety of our families and communities.

Every Firearm I bought at a gun show, I had a background check...Is this a problem in other areas of the country? 0 -
I have bought a 22 rifle at a gun show and did not get a background check.
I bought a Mexican Mauser and had to do a background check.
It is legal in Louisiana to buy a firearm from an individual to an individual.

Yes, we should all want to keep guns out of the hands of criminals ... but I'm not at all sure that gun shows are the big free-for-all that is being portrayed by some of the anti-gun crowd.
It does seem like private sales is more of a problem, but how can that be controlled? Maybe make the seller liable for anything that happens ... but how can you do that with a private sale ... no records ... no nothing and very little responsibility.
I guess the gov't could just ban private sales of anything that is potentially dangerous! OK, now that problem is solved, could we move to more pressing issues! [:p][:p][;)][;)] [^]0 -

What? why would any gun owner want to accept "closing the loophole" they will never keep guns out of the hands of criminals, gun shows are a legitimate place for civilian to go and trade or buy arms without goverment interferance, show me how this will keep one gun off the streets, or out of the hands of criminals, It will not, it will only put one more layer of goverment interferance into your ability to legally own a weapon.
If your happy with registration of guns move to a state that has it.But this is a BAD bill and will ultimitly shut down gun shows.
Ask yourself does this make me safer. I think the answer is NO.

Lautenberg... isn't he the SOB that screwed us out of being able to make\register new machine gun receivers back in 1986? 0 -
Not that I agree with any gun control law-period.
But, this will not shut down a single gunshow or reduce (by any appreciable amount) the amount of guns sold at one. What it will do is prevent you from transferring ownership of any firearm without a background check. Along with this check is (guaranteed)registration of that 1) firearm (or at least the presence thereof) and 2) firearm owner.0
