selling wood from oak tree?
I have a large oak tree in my back yard that I want to get rid of. Are there companies out there that would buy the tree from me to get the wood?

Look in the phone book, but I think most places wouldn't want to mess around with one tree. I guess it would depend on the tree and how much effort would be needed for them to get it. 0 -
Get ahold of some local woodworking club.
The guy next door to me belongs to one and he recently bid on a couple lots of hardwood from trees that the city had cut down.
There were LOTS of bids and the city made some pretty good money on the stuff that would otherwise have only been used for firewood.0 -
Depends where you are. Here in Southern California we get about $200 a cord - White Oak is even more expensive - Northern California, Mariposa County in mountains near Yosemite, $265.00 a cord of split oak wood, $340 Northern Ca, San Francisco area!, but only $45 dollars a pick-up truck load, Northern indiana, or $120 for a 4x4x8 in Central, Wis.

I do believe he was inquiring about someone interested in it for lumber purposes. Like building furniture. If it is a big tree in good shape, it could bring as much as 3-5 dollars a board foot(1"x12"x12"). I would have to speculate that there is at least 200-300 board foot by the way he talked, and have seen oaks with over 2000 board feet.0 -
Most sawmills shy away from "yard trees" due to the fact that many have metal imbedded in them. 0 -
Lots of guys have portable saw mills that would take care of it for you. One tree is not worth messing with unless it is really nice. 0 -
if you cant cut it down yourself, contact a tree triming company have them cut it for you.as stated before it is unlikely that anyone wants to fool with one tree. once it's on the ground then you have options you can take it to a sawmill and see if they want it or you can cut it up for fire wood . where you live i wouldn't think you should have any trouble selling firewood 0 -
If there are 300 board feet, and the wood is worth $3 per board foot, then the lumber is worth $900.
That is, it is worth that on the shelf at the building supply store.
First you have to pay to have the tree cut and limbed, the limbs must be chipped and hauled.
The trunk must be hauled to the sawmill, then sawed into planks, then dried, then hauled to the lumber store.
Lots and lots of middlemen, the tree owner is not going to see much of that money. Sad but true, probably more valuable as firewood.
Like others have said sawmills are literally scared to death of hitting that old screw hook that got put in that tree in 1970 to hang the hammock, but has since disappeared as the tree grew around it.
Hit that screw hook at the sawmill with that big blade and a man could die, it has happened before. Surely the blade will be ruined and they are expensive.0 -
No saw mill will accept a tree from someone's yard due to the risk of embedded metal.
I sold $18,000.00 worth of Red Oak off the property a few years ago and they would not touch 3 huge Red Oaks 60 foot tall on the edge of the lawn that would have been high dollar veneer logs worth close to $5000.00 according to the scaler.....
Those big saw blades are worth a ton of money, and if they shatter they will take lives.0 -

If that tree is worth several hundred dollars why couldn't/wouldn't they scan it with a metal detecter? I would think you could find someone in your area that would scan it for a few bucks. 0 -
coledigger4 is on the right track. Most of the high end mills in my area have metal detectors built in to the machinery. The logs are scanned right after they come thru the debarker. 0 -

The highend mills do scan for junk in the wood. But the high end mills wont buy from a homeowner because of insurance issues. In Michigan to sell logs you must have workers comp insurance. The small mills will saw it for you but most will want you to cover the cost if they saw into any metal that is in the log.
I think you have a firewood tree unless you can find a portable bandsaw mill to cut it where it lands. Bandsaw blades are not as high dollar as the big circle blades. Also bandsaw blades wont fly as far when they run into metal like the circle blades can.0 -
Like it's already been said, no sawmill will touch it. Your best bet would be to put an add in the local paper & see if somebody will take it down for free for lumber or firewood. There are some websites that can tell you how many board feet it is, it depending on the diameter & usable hight. Around here the price of oak has dropped alot in the last couple of years, I can get kiln dryed red oak for around $1 a board foot. It probably worth more for firewood. It all depends on the area you live in. 0 -
