Clint Eastwoods' Letters From Iwo Jima came out on DVD Tuesday. Two disc set, one being special features.

Don't want to spoil the ending for you, so just say it has good photography and accurate props.[:D][:p]

    Tonight will be the first time that this movie is shown without subtitles.
    The Japanese will be speaking English throughout the film.

    If you have not seen it, I highly recommend it. I think it is on it's way to becoming one of my top 5 war movies.

    The thing I found most incomprehensible is the Japanese predisposition to kill themselves, to die an honorable death in battle, by whatever means necessary, even if it is at their own hands, rather than to retreat and live to fight another day. With a strategy like that, is it any wonder we eventually defeated them?

    I watched it and thought it was great. Eastwood and Speilberg are a real pair. And, I think Ken Watanabe is just a fabulous actor.

    One of our friends, Bob Tant of Oak Harbor, WA was the pilot who killed the horse.

    He was then shot down. Tried for a day to keep his seat-mate above the water 'cuz his Mae West was punctured. Man Drownded. Then Bob was strafed by both sides. Finally swam to an offshore rock to get a drink of rainwater. Then he was machine gunned by the Japanese, and captured. He was beaten because of the horse. Taken to a POW camp in Japan before the invasion.

    Bob took revenge by marrying and bringing one of Japan's sweetest women to America.

    He contacted the man from Wisconsin who wrote the Iwo Jima book, and told his story....perhaps that is why the horse is in the movie.

    That is a great war film. My hat is off to Clint Eastwood.
    I like the subtitles because my hearing is not so good.

    The bottom line being that those hated Japs were as human as any of us. They had loved ones. They had wives, parents, and kids. They lived under a system of peer pressure beyond what we could ever imagine. A mass suicide forced by an officer? He would have been shot had be been on the US side.

    Animals? Yes! And we weren't? Does anyone think the scene where two prisoners were murdered by a Marine was not at least somewhat common? Think about it... What does one do with two prisoners when shells are falling, you're on the front lines, and everybody and their brother is shooting at you? Do you escort prisoners peacefully back to the rear at the certain risk of your own life? Don't get me wrong, the murder of our GI's by the Japanese was no better. War is hell.

    Subtitles? The Japanese didn't speak English. English lacks the ability to express emotions conveyed in Japanese. It would be the same should the movie have been made by a Japanese producer about the US forces. Better to use English with Japanese subtitles.

    Too bad we fail to learn from history. Too bad we're bound to repeat it time after time. Too bad we allow ourselves to hate a faceless enemy. Sad that we can dehumanize our fellow man and justify war.

    But we can and we do! Fact is we're good at it. Maybe it's like George Patton said... Deep down we love war. God help us.

    I enjoyed the movie. The subtitles didn't bother me and I liked that it had subtitles because I had to keep the tv volume low cause my son was sleeping and my wife was trying to make a cake.
    A friend of mines had a grandfather that fought on Iwo Jima and he told how he had shot a Japanese prisoner because he saw his buddy get blown up in front of him, so yes there was killing of prisoners on both sides.
