well, ive seen all kinds of stupidity in my life, but that takes the cake..unless i saw the video of it i wouldnt have believed it!..and i supose the same idiots who came up with the idea are the same people who decide on what laws should be passed ....there are a lot of whales wash up on the beaches every year here, near where i used to live there were over 130 pilot whales died, and on the west coast there were dozens of sperm whales washed up and died...all that was done was to get excavators on the beach and bury them...sea lice and crabs and time do the rest.....blowing up a whale carcass...what next dear god, what next!

More than 10 yrs old, scout- that was Lane County Oregon, 1970. The Highway Department put roughly 2000 lbs of 40% dynamite under the whale, and learned that since water saturated sand cannot compress, all of the force of the shot WILL go up. I purchased the VHS version from the TV station, and have used that in blaster's training. Real high on my "Do not try this at home" list!

I just cannot see that too many times. Every time I think I am having a hard time I think to myself....at least rotting blubber isn't raining down on me in 50lb chunks! Then, my day seems to be a tad better.

I remember when they did this. I always wondered how they thought it wasn't going to blow decaying whale guts all over the beach. Some people just can't think![}:)]

I remermber this one as well.
The people that came up with the idea were ROASTED BIGTIME when the blubber settled.
As I recall ,their theory was that the smaller pieces would be scavenged faster, and rot way faster, than one whole body would.
    Theories,unfortunately,are just that.[8D]
