I have it narrowed down to the transmission I believe, but if any can shed some light on the specifics let me know. When I accelerate to around 40 mph the car begins to shake, but the shaking stops when I take my foot off the pedal. The car also jerks slightly in reverse and when starting out. My friends father said its the torque converter, but I have no idea. I have a 92 buick regal if that helps anyone. I really need to figure this out because this problem didnt use to start till around 50, but it is seemingly getting worse. Please help.

    A friend had an 1988 olds with a V6. How often should the timing belt be changed? The owners manual is missing from the car. The car has 120K on it now.

    Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

    I think your timing might be off, your pushing your luck and it gets real expensive if it goes out.

    yea if you shear your timing belt, you bend all your valves and it ruins the motor. On hondas the recommended milage for change i think is 90k miles.

    The rule for a timing belt is around 65 to 70K miles.

    I'm betting that it was probably due at 60K and that he is driving on borrowed time. I don't think that the GM V6 series are interference engines (break a timing belt on such an engine and you are likely buying a new one) but even so, a broken timing belt will put the car out of action. He might as well have the tensioner, all other belts, the water pump and radiator hoses replaced along with the timing belt.

    GM timing belts are recomended for change every 60k miles

    And if it's good, it's $150 to replace a $25 belt.

    I am fairly sure that this model doesn't have a belt, it has a chain.

    my honda was due at 105K, just had it done today to the tune of $613...ridiculous.

    My wife's Honda and Toyota's were due at 60,000. Did the Honda myself. Paid to have the Toyota done.

    I think Harold is right....don't think it is an over head cam engine.

    An '88 Olds should have a variation of the 3.8, great motor that has a chain and not a belt, it is also not an interfearance design so if it breaks it means that the engine stops, that is all. I would change it as the car is 20 years old and most of the 3.8's had nylon gears, when a tooth breaks it becomes impossable to get the car into proper time. While the car is apart it is a good time to change the drive belt, waterpump, thermostat and the upper and lower radiator hoses. The drive belt and waterpump have to come off anyways so it is a good time to take car of them.
