plasma tv ?
I have a 46 inch plasma tv in my bedroom and it has a football size shape spot on it. You can only see it with the tv off or showing a picture thats real light. Its made by Hitachi if that means anything. Any ideas if it is a easy fix? Thanks David

NO. if you leave it up for too long, and Fox news or something comes up with that icon it will burn RIGHT into the screen.

From someone who has a plasma TV, if the price is right, go ahead and buy it. Burn in can be a problem if you leave your set on 24/7, just like with a computer monitor. That being said, I also have an LCD, and like it as much, if not better, than the plasma. 0 -
What Jacob2008 said is no longer true. Modern Plasma TV's has electronics that prevent burn-in.
I have had several Panasonic plasma TVs. They are awesome - you will not find a better picture in any other type of TV. I have never had any burn-in problems. I highly recommend them, particularly Panasonic.
Look for a high contrast ratio. The newer Panasonic models do 10,000:1 or better. Also, with any big screen pay attention to the recommended size vs viewing distance.0 -

No, really go to wal-mart and look at them, ask them to switch the channel, you'll see the burnt in indention, i don't care if its 400.00 or 4000.00. they're all burnt in
Im not saying they are BAD tv's.. they are really nice, and dont take up space, but its not worth it if you have to run out of the house fast and leave it on...0 -
With Plasma you will get a lot of glare if used in a room with bright lights or a lot of windows. LCD is better in this situation. 0 -
he bought this one last year, i could probably buy a new one for the same price, but then add tax, wall mount, and entertainment center/cabinet i'm coming out ahead, i'm wondering about life expectancy, i've read many reviews on plasma/lcd/dlp all have about the same ratio as far as reliability
most of the television channels now only display for a certain amount of time to avoid any burn in, as long as he has had it there currently is no issues, burn in for computer monitors went out long time ago when they quit making phosphorus screen
admin how does yours do on none hd movies?, i have a friend that has a Hitachi and the old king kong was on, and it did look a bit like digital breakup, i'm not sure if it was just his settings or not
edit: i'm in the basement so absolutely no sunlight, just 2 4 bulb fluorescent, and wal-mart may very well be selling the old stock plasma0 -
Samsung 42" Widescreen Plasma HDTV ( HPT4254) - we absolutely love it! TV or rentals - can't be beat! If the house burned down today ... it'd be the first thing I replace tomorrow!

Plasma is already becoming an outdated technology. They use more power, run hotter, they're heavier, and if anything, I mean ANYTHING goes wrong with it, you throw it away. I've talked with the guys at work about them and we call them throw away tvs.
A guy at work has a friend that paid 4 grand for one with a one year warranty. The 2nd year, it screwed up on them and they just threw it away. Ask any salesman if you can bring one back for repair. If you buy insurance on one, for four years, they'll tell you if you have to bring it back in, they'll junk yours and replace it with a new one. Just ask.
LCDs are much more reliable and the picture's just as good IMO. The worst that can happen is maybe a single tiny pixel will burn out on you after a few years. Maybe not.
I wouldn't buy a plasma unless they gave me a 10 year warranty for free.
Just warning you. When you spend a few grand on a tv and it screws up on you, it's very aggrivating.0 -

Coincidentally, I was just on the phone with my friend that owns the TV repair shop that does warrant repair for all the TV brands.
I asked him if plasma TVs had improved, and he said "No".
If you want a reliable, durable TV with a great long-term picture, LCD is the only way to go. DLP will last about 3 years typically, and plasma is, in most cases, a technology that will give a lifespan of 2 to 3 years.
If you pay money for a plasma - especially a used one - you will probably regret it, unless you're as rich as Croesus like zip.

A big screen TV is an investment. You will probably use it more than just about anything else in your life. So don't cheap out, and for heaven's sake don't buy it from walmart or best buy or the low-end stores. These stores typically do not carry the premium brands in electronics, and even if they do they usually carry the inferior models.
Once you figure out what you want I recommend buying it from one of Plasma TV's recommended merchants: www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com I bought 2 of mine from DTV City. I have never seen a retail store come anywhere near their prices and you will end up getting a better model for the same or lower price.0 -
Thanks, My son has had a 42" plasma for five years, he has two little children and it is on all day. He has never had a problem with the set or burn in. I have a 50" plasma, great picture and you can watch it from any chair in the man room, bright colors snd clear picture. My son in law purchased a lcd and you can hear him grumbling everytime he watches a football game here or at my sons house. The way things move fast these days both selections will be out dated soon anyway, buy the tv and good luck.

Jacob.... Any tv sold at walmart ARE NOT the same quality tv's that you can buy at a local tv shop... I know walmart advertises that they are the same thing, BUT THEY ARE NOT.
The manufactures actualy build tv's specificaly for walmart... They put MUCH cheaper control boards and componets in them... How do you think they are able to sell them cheaper than everyone else.
I know this Jacob because i used to sell Tv's with along with my appliances... Tv's are to much of a cut throat bussiness, So now i only sell appliances.
Plasmas that you buy at a local tv shop are great. I bought a 50'' Toshiba plasma 2 years ago and have no complaints at all.0 -
I have had a 50 inch Sony KE-50XBR950 Plasma in our home theater since about 2004 and it has been very reliable and gives a great picture (nothing matches Sony for picture quality IMHO). I agree that plasma is on the way out and that LCD is probably the way to go. You may want to think twice about purchasing a plasma TV. 0 -
if you don't need one right now, consider waiting a couple years, Laser TV's are going to be the next big thing, so I hear anyways. Uses high tech prisms to break light up into the spectrum. Supposed to get you better colors than LCD or plasma, use less energy, and be lighter. Resolution is supposed to be superb. Believe they had one at on of the big electronics shows this year 0 -

My friend says Sony makes the most reliablr TVs, by far.

I wanted one for our living room. The room is large so I wanted at least 60 inches. Sticker shock on the plasmas and LCD's caused me to purchase a SONY DLP KDS-60A3000. Only 13" in depth, a tad thicker than the plasma/LCD, and wouldn't work if you absolutely need a wall mounted TV.
It came in at $2000 with the four year warranty which includes the bulbs. I must say, the TV absolutely rocks. Think I am going to get the same model in 50 inch for the bedroom.
