Appalachian Trail
The camping thread question got me to thinking.
Have any of y'all done any serious hiking? I know a bunch were in the military but I mean more recreationally.
I am thinking about attacking the Appalachian Trail with my two boys.

Currently reading a book about walking the trail. Sounds interesting and tough,but also sounds like a life chainging experence for sure.
Have any of you had this experence in your life?0 -
We hiked 55 miles of the Appalachian Trail when I was in Explorer Scouts.
That was a great trip.
The trail runs 10 miles from my house here in the NC mountains.
Just about every year I pick up a hitchiker who has travelled down from Yankeeland to hike back north on the Appalachian Trail.0 -

where are you? I went to school in Boone, and my wife is from Asheville. I dream of owning a house in Hot Springs!0 -
When we were in Virginia in the late 70's we would go up to the Shenandoah National Park and hike parts of the trail. In that area it was well maintained and pretty easy hiking. There were really nice vistas and a number of very interesting side trails. Skyline Drive was in close proximity to the trail and was another really beautiful place to visit. 0 -
I've done 60-70 miles of it twice for summer camp, in the area around Sliding Rock in NC 0 -
BLUE MT. IN PA.
my hut is not far from the Appalachian trail........one cold rainy morning 3 girls were on my porch sleeping[:D]...i took them in and gave them breakfast...they said they were walking the trail for weeks and were so tired of this outdoor living[:D]that they would appreciate if i could take them to the nearest bus stop[:D]

I am between Marshall and Hot Springs, but closer to Marshall.0 -
We drove the appalachian Hwy through blowning rock to asheville this summer. I hope to do it again next year. 0 -

I suspect that you drove the BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY from Blowing Rock to Asheville. If you ever get to Blowing Rock again ask for directions down the "Globe Road" one of the coolest drives I have ever seen!0 -
I've done parts of the trail. I have a friend who has done the whole thing a couple times. 0 -
Rode the Blue Ridge Parkway a few times from Bunea Vista, VA down to Cherokee NC and Maggie Valley for bike rallies.
Never did do more than 3 to 4 miles at a time on the Appalachian Trail.0 -

Globe road is an old dirt road through one of the most scenic and impressive areas you will see...but it is kinda rough travelling
Blowing rock is a beautiful place and there are some fantastic old hotels and B&Bs there as well as resturants...
Yell at me 'fore you go again and I will suggest places in both BR and Asheville.0 -

There are several places in my area where the trail crosses a road. If you decide to do it, get in touch with me, and I could meet you with supplies or a ride. I've given rides to many hikers, (there is a trail hospice near me where one can get a free shower and bed.) Many have a reaction to being around civilization after being on the trail for days. One told me that it was strange looking up at the sky because he had been covered by tree canopy for days.0 -

About 1993+/-. My nephew took me hiking/camping for five days starting in Gatlinberg on a round trip that allowed a high point where you can see all 5 or 6 States but we could not see 100 feet. It rained almost the whole time and I was as sick as a dog with a cold /flu from the second day. It would be a great walk in the sun!
That time with my Nephew was priceless!0 -
I've been on several little snips of it and it is a wonderful trail. With my knees, I'll never go the whole thing, but what I've been on is great! 0 -

I have been to that point about 6 or 7 years ago now. It was a great day when we went, but I think you can only see 4 states.0
