I know, best vermit gun

I know this is an old one.
But what is the best out of the box gun,,model and cal.
For grooundhogs up to yotes.
Not a rich mans gun, was told to look at savage arms model 12 vermiter???
Looking for a savage model 12 vss whith a choate stock. Any idea's guys.

    the 22-250 is an excellent choice in that precise rifle. I have one.

    Shoots nearly as good as a 300 dollar barrel Remington 700 with a lot of time invested in chambering...

    The .243 is a superb round..throat life might be somewhat limited.

    Unless you intend shooting frequently beyond 5 hundred yards..either will work well.

    How far out do you want to take them??

    This is a relevant question because it leads to a discussion of bullet weight/velocity/ballistic coefficient/caliber/rifle type/scope brand, power, and features(reticle/bullet drop compensator).

    If you can answer the range question, we can be of more help with the rifle question.

    Savage 12LRPV in 22-250

    One of the guys brought his out to the range and let five of us try five rounds each through it. This was factory ammo as the gun was brand new. At 100 yards all 5 of us put all 25 rounds intot the same 1/4" hole. Not bad for an out of the box gun, it shoots better now with his handloads.

    I would like to get out 25 - 500 yrds with good put down power.
    You mentioned 243,22-250 and how about the 25-06.
    I know all 3 are good,but what can get you out there and are easy on the pocket book for ammo.

    depends on what you really want to do, and how far out for the chambering. A 223 will do the job under the right conditions out to 400 yards. If you are looking for something to also crack a deer or two, go to the 243 or higher. Your choice of rifle depends on your taste, and budget. Personally, I would go CZ or Tikka, with a Remington placing second behind those.

    I gotta put in my vote for Savage.

    Not just "in their price range", but overall, Savage makes a fine weapon.

    You can get purtier ones...

    But it's gonna cost you.
