Old model Vaquero and new model
What is the diff and why the new model?

The old model, although sturdier, was much heavier and bulkier and didn't fit well in SAA holsters. The new model with smaller frame is nearly identical in size to the Colt SAA. It also has a reverse-index pawl for unloading and swept hammer for faster cocking and firing.

Cowboy Action shooters did not like the heavy feel of the old Vaquero, so Ruger shortened the cylinder, slimmed down the grips and frame and made some other minor changes to make the Vaquero feel more like a Colt SAA or clone. I am happy they finally moved all the writing on the side of the barrel to the bottom where its not as obnoxious. The old Vaquero could handle some really hot loads, but everyone says not to fire the super hot stuff out of the new Vaqueros. 0 -
the main difference is the new vaquero is on a smaller frame-supposedly to "feel" more like a Colt SAA instead of a Ruger Blackhawk, which is what the old Vaquero frame is built on. The new model is also not built to withstand heavier +p loads that the old model can handle-probably stuff like hot Buffalo Bore ammo etc. which Buffalo Bore even states on their website. I have an old model 4 5/8" stainless model with Hogue faux ivory grips--i LOVE this handgun. It is very accurate and I have packed it on many trips into the outdoors. 0 -
