I hunted prairie dogs with a 22 and then 22 mag for quite a while. When I got my 243, that is when I learned prairie dogs could fly. Don 0 -

There is a huge population of them between Peetz and Stering. Since there's no way to safely shoot them, and gassing seems to be out of the question in that particular area, it'll be God's own miracle if we don't have a major plague outbreak in the next few years.

The friend who is loading up the ammo for our outing uses Moly coated 48gr? MatchKings, IIRC... 0 -
I've gotten real good results from Nosler 55-gr ballistic tips.
I've ordered 100 Barnes "Varmint Grenades". At only 36 (or 37 mebbe?) grains, they're long for caliber. They're made of ground, pressed copper and have a HUGE hollow point.
As soon As I get some stats, I'll post 'em.

EEEE-HA!! I live in central Oregon and shoot a lot of sage-rats, Belding Ground Squirrels. Not nearly as big, but fun none the less. Anyone here know a place close by in a neighboring state where I could go or arrange a P-Dog hunt this summer? I would love to take a couple of weeks and just help out with the control of the little buggers, and my Remington XR-100 needs the exercise! 0 -

If the FWS get's there way they will be protected, they are talking about adding the "Gunnison praire dog" to the ES list. Not only will we coloradan's stand to lose access to millions of acres of public lands and the use of 100's of thousands acres of productive farm land.0 -

They are about a foot long and weight about two pounds. On calm days, I use a 22/250 with a 60 grain bullet. Breezy days, I go to a 25-06 with an 87 grain bullet. Hit square like that one was and the hydrostatic shock does what you see in the pictures. At a distance all you see is a red mist. In the central and western US there are 'towns' of prairie dogs that number in the thousands. They are the ultimate in long-range varmint shooting because they simply CANNOT keep their heads down for any length of time.

I know. I've been trying to follow the news. There are folks who think the largest subspecies, the black-tailed that you find here should be "protected" as well. The Gunnison is the least populous of all the sub-species, but damn it, man. When they wreck pasture and farm land, they gotta go! I can show you pastures that have been turned into moonscapes here in Northeast Colorado from dog towns. And on the heels of the drouth we've been experiencing, it's getting worse.
I've actually watched smug, self-important prairie-dog protectionists brought to a sputtering halt with this comment,
"You know what I've never heard anyone say?, 'Boy I sure do miss those passenger pigeons'"
