Old people should stay off ladders
Dheffley's post on falling off a ladder brings this to mind:

My wife did this while I was at work last Thursday. She was trying to paint the living room and thought she was on the last step of the ladder(she wasn't). She narrowly missed the window sill and a 2X6 stud with the top of her head.
She called me to ask what the symptoms of a concussion are. I did a bit of quick research on the internet and called her back. Given the symptoms, of irritability, forgetfulness, lack of concentration, dizziness, and loss of interest in favorite toys, she had a concussion before I left.
Luckily, her brother lives next door and was able to monitor her for a while. She suffered no ill effects, other than a little muscle soreness the next day

A lady who goes to my church was cleaning the top of her refrigerator on a small step ladder. She fell off it and will use a walker for the rest of her life. She was in the hospital for several months and almost died. She is what I would call "middle aged", not old. It can happen to anybody.
Ladders are dangerous, and the more comfortable you are using them the more dangerous they are.0 -
I was standing on a tall stepladder trimming a limb off a tree. This was a light-duty Wal*Mart ladder and the support legs were pretty flimsy. The limb I cut fell and hit one of the support legs and broke it. This caused the ladder to tip and fall, so I fell too, running chain saw and all. Fortunately, I didn't get hurt very badly, only strained some muscles and ligaments around my knee. 0 -
Was working at a hospital relocating a generator discharge air vent. Was using a Remington 22 to drive nails into the walls to support it. One more to drive and the hospital safety guy stopped me, told me they don't allow those things there anymore.
Seems the week before they had a contractor doing some work that involved anchoring something above a drop ceiling and one of the workers was using the same driver I was. It appears he was on top of an 8' ladder, you know, above that label that tells you to not sit or stand above this label when he got a little unbalanced. To regain his balance he pushed the driver on the top step where it fired, the nail went through the top step and down to the next one where it penetrated his foot and the rung, nailed his foot to the second from the top rung of an 8' step ladder.
Well his balance realy went then and he toppled over. Hit the floor, broke his collar bone, arm, ribs and got a fractured skull out of the deal. Maintenance folks had to cut the rung out of the ladder and transport him around the corner to the emergency room where they ended up helping the doctor cut the nail so they could get his foot and the rung seperated. Those are some seriously tough nails fired out of those nail guns, will go into a schedule 40 pipe.
Ladders can be dangerous. I've never falen off of one but have come close. Be careful with those things, especially if they involve cutting tree branches and/or power tools of any kind.0 -

What a wild story! The guy nailed his own foot to the ladder he was on top of, and then the ladder started to fall over. He couln't jump off!

I'm not really fond of ladders either, maybe 'cause I'm older than dirt. But for outside stuff I made a cage for the forklift so I can have my wife put me up on the roof easily. Now if I could just get her to remember the difference between the lever that moves the boom and the one that moves the forks.
Now even the dog likes to go up on the roof to do a little work. I have some pictures of the dog on the roof somewhere.0 -
Bobski,, I looked at your picture before I read what you had to say. My first thought was those ladders haven't moved in 4 years.. LOL
Do wish I could come over and help you, but the cost of gas makes it impossible.0 -
Never met a tall ladder I've really liked.
