Movie "Enemy at the gates"

What a movie! As good and in some ways better than "Saving private Ryan".

    A great war movie. Some vicious fighting in those Russkie cities in the snow.

    ...Some of the very worst fighting of WWII took place in Russia, beyond brutal. The Nazi's had their azz handed to them by the Ruskies...[;)]

    Shows the flawed mentality of the RUssian Army. "You get a gun. You get bullets and go find a gun." Then kill your own soldiers. SOunds like the RUssian conscrpits aren't treated much better today.

    forgot where I read it from, maybe here even, but a better movie was "Stalingrad" (german, 1993). said "enemy at the gates" had too much of a love story in the plot, whereas the german movie was 100% war movie form their perspective, how they kept trying to advance but got clobbered at every turn.

    from what I understand the seige of Sevastopol made Stalingrad look like a walk in the park.

    also btw, in the grocery store the other day they had a "WWII History" magazine or some such with a feature on the Russian's "iron grip" around Stalingrad and how they were going to totally destroy every nazi and axis troop within their circle, how it was too ambitious and I guess, their shortcomings. I didn't read it, no time to browse, but y'all might be interested.

    If you don't count the price of twenty million dead Russians as not having your ass handed to you.

    The Russians were within a whisper of losing the city before Stalin pulled some of his Far East troops out of the line facing the Japs and sent them to fight the Germans. These were mostly Mongol and Siberian troops, men that were very used to being out in the subzero winter weather.

    Read the book( War of the Rats) it was so much better! the movie came from this book.

    yeah...and the US had two Army Air Corps pilots that went to fight for the brits, then were in a bizarro love triangle, then fought at Pearl Harbor, and then flew in the Doolittle raid where one of them was killed by the nips [xx(]

    It's a Hollywood movie (by definition: enough BS to fill a swimming pool)...read the book by the same name before taking movies at face value.

    I am not sure but I think the more important factor was that the Far East troops were stationed there (far east) for some time...they were SOLDIERS, not some conscripts who held their first Mosin-Nagant last week. Possibly quite a few of them even saw action against the Japanese when Zhukov whooped them in '39 [:D]

    Very good movie.
    I love the part about him with his grandfather hunting for wolves, breathing into their scarves to hide their vapor, very realistic....


    I would not say better than "Private Ryan," just a different perspctive toward the same means.

    And just think about this: the Russians and the Germans each lost more men killed in that one battle than we did during the entirety of the Vietnam War.

    Yes the German losses in Russia were staggering.
    Imagine if Hitler had not invaded Russia, and the Allies had to face the entire might of the Wehrmacht on Normandy Beach.
