Urgent Computer Help Please !!

My son was using the computer last night an it qcted funny for awhile then he said it was normal. Now this a.m. my wife goes to log on and the screen says this ( We apologize for the inconvience but Windows will not start succeefully. A Recent hardware or software change may have effected this. Then we have choices of how to start the computer :
1) Safe Mode
2) Safe Mode with Networking
3) Safe Mode with Command Prompt
4) LAst known Good Configuration
5) Start Windows Normally

Seconds til Windows Starts : then it counts down from 30 seconds.

I have tried every way to start above and it acts like it wants to start then goes right back to the same screen with the choices listed above .Anybody have any ideas how to fix this ? Thanks .......

    I would try rebooting first and then a system restore if the reboot doesn't work.

    Go ahead and start it in Safe Mode or Last known good configuration. After it boots, try to either restore to a previous good boot date, or run your virus scan and see what it finds. If all else fails, load the Windows disk in the drive and select "repair a previous installation".

    I cant start in any mode . It tries to start then goes back to the same page and counts down again .

    Do you by chance have a "boot disk" that you can boot the computer instead of booting from the hard drive? If not, you can possibly boot up from the Windows XP CD (if you have it).

    What dheffley said.

    Except that if you can access the hard drive after you've booted from the software CD, I'd back up anything I didn't care to lose before attempting to repair the Windows installation. Good luck.

    Then you're going to have to boot from the windows CD and do the repair. Like Spurgemastur said, once you get booted to the CD, stop and back up everything you don't want to loose just incase.

    When booting from a CD or floppy disk:

    If your computer is set to boot from the hard drive before it "reads" the CD drive(s)---which is usually the case, you will have to enter your bios setup and change the setting to read your CD drive before it trys to boot from your hard drive.

    I had a similar problem this morning. After about three attempts, I tried to do a Norton Ghost Restore from a floppy. It started to load PC DOS and froze. I tried with the backup floppy. Same thing. Then I tried again from C Drive and started in SAFE MODE. Then I selected shut down. Next attempt it booted.

    I have no idea what went wrong or how I got around it, but it seems OK now.

    Try the safe mode, then shut down, then power on again. Maybe it will work for you too.

    most now do not require a change of "boot sequence" if you have a bootable cd in the drive, it reads all drives in a pre-boot sequence, and will default to the dvd/cd drive it has a bootable disc in {since the exclusion of floppy drives, they want to keep you out of start up}


    someone deleted critical files ether a virus did it or a person in an attempt to delete something else, you may or may not be able to do a repair, i have seen this a few times, out of all of them 1 was a bad ribbon to the hd the rest was unrepairable, and required a reformat, i call it "the loop of hell"
