    If I remember right, it was banned in the US around the turn of the century because it was considered poison?

    Tried it in Germany in Dec '06 at the Kristmas Markets. What I had had a licorice flavor to it. Wasn't bad but I didn't think fantastic enough to "Write home to mom" about. Saw several other different ones but there to many more types of beer to try that were better.

    Was reading on the US Customs web site. They said if you try to bring any into the country they will confiscate it and can arrest you. Don't know why, can't remember what the alcohol content was if that was the reason.

    it has been legal now for a few years. I have 2 different brands in stock,..one from France and one from Switzerland. It is heavily anise flavored and much stronger than Sambuca. One is 106 proof and the other is 124 proof. They both sport the original recipe that is well over 100yrs old and still contain the original amount of wormwood extract. By the time you go chasing the green fairy,..you'll be dead from alcohol poisoning. The extract by itself??,...who knows. It is a halucinagen, but not in enough concentration. Supposedly the buzz if "different"

    Some drinks used to have opium in them. Maybe that's why it's illegal. I brought some Uzo back from Greece and it tasted like licorice. It used to have opium in it way back when.

    It's banned here because it is said to be habit forming. I tried it when I was in Japan, where it is legal. It tastes somewhat like licourish((sp) to me, and don't even think about a chaser, because NOTHING will catch it. Even the Japanese don't drink it much. Had a buddy over there that would drink it regularly when he got about 3 sheets to the wind. Always impressed the heck out of the bartenders.

    You guys must caution your youselves when buying the so-called US legal stuff.

    It is true that it has the wormwood extract; however it has been genetically modified to NOT have the good stuff in it [the delerium toxins that make it good]. In my opinion it is NOT wormwood/ absinthe.


    The good stuff with all the effects in it can be bought and consumed, but bars and stores can't sell it. The best bet would be online at http://www.absinthe.bz/ . Most mix it with sugar and water until milky white.

    I tried some of the "original" from france. Horrible stuff, couldn't finish the glass. If you have a bar, it is nice to have a bottle as a conversation piece, but as for drinking it, forget it!

    It is legal to import it/order through mail as long as it complies with your regular state's requirements for shipping alcohol.

    There is an absynth that you can now buy in your local liquor store that does not use wormwood but some other ingredient that supposedly supplies the same taste.

    The protagonist in "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was nipping the absinthe, had a glass or two every night, right up until his death in battle.

    I have never had any but I drank that Uzo in Greece. I barely could handle one sip, I can't stand licorice.

    has no opium in it, still has southern wormwood in it, and is legal to buy, most of the bans 100 years ago where due to the whine makers fear of it replacing whine, while it's buzz it different it is no worse than Yeager meister, there are 2 versions sold here, Absente, and Absinthe it is a Liqueur, and is treated as any other alcohol, not a drug
