Buck Shot for handguns....
Does anyone have experience with buckshot rounds for handguns...I've seen snake shot before, but one of my wholesalers has buck shot rounds for .357 Mag and .40 S&W. With the .40 S&W for example, each pellet comes out of the barrel doing 850 fps and has muzzle energy of 105 ft lbs. Does anyone know if this stuff would damage the rifling in your barrel??? Seems like you could turn a 10 round mag into a 30 round mag with these things... Your thoughts????

in the case of the .40 S&W, I wonder if it would cycle the slide??? 0 -
I have seen the buckshot loads in .357. Seems to me the 40cal with its shorter case would hold less.
The .357's I have seen carried 3 pieces of buck in each round. They wont "damage" the rifling as they are softer that the barrel, but they will lead it up.0 -
Only in rimfire, but I shoot it through a "smooth bore" rifle. If the load is lead, it won't hurt the barrel, anything else I would give a thumbs down. What would be your intent with this load? 0 -
i would stick with a single projectile for many reasons, leave shot for the shotguns 0 -

Taurus Judge, shoots 45 Colt or any 410 2 1/2" shotshell. Available in 3 or 6 inch barrel. I suppose to be legal, the barrel must be rifled but 00 buck should be pretty bad at 25 - 30 feet. Tom 0 -
I got this out of a late-60's "American Rifleman"
If you A) hand load and
can find 38-cal gas checks, you can make your own.
1) Prime your brass
2) dispense powder
3) press in one gas check, cup-side up.
(you can use a dowell for this)
4) dispense buckshot
5) press in another gas check, cup-side down and crimp lightly.
I'd imagine the type and amount of powder would take some fiddlin' to get right.
I know, there are a lot of if's, but..

I have and have fired 22-357 mag with both bird shot #8 up to 00 I have never seen a problem with the rifling but I can tell you that the shell wont cycle in an automatic. I have even loaded my own using wax to seal the end of the shell, with no problem. I'm not sure what you want to do with it but its pretty inacurate.
For those who care the Judge fires 410 shells at 50ft. the spread is enormous I fired into a 16x24in. paper target and it was all over the paper, at 25ft. it has a nice spread. would definetly put a perp. on the floor. If your intrested I'll get some pictures at a couple different distances.this has become my defence weapon of choice.Looking in my ammo box I have 22,and 9mm. now
also Eric as a side note that dealer that I got my judge from has one with a 6 1/2in. bar.0 -
Get the right tool for the job. [:D] .45 colts, birdshot, buckshot, even slugs. Might be a reason to buy a new pistol. 0 -

With the right kind of wax, that's a much better idea than the one I posted. Thanks.
I'm just a sucker for do-it-yourself thangs. Besides, that Judge just looks too dang ungainly for my particular tastes.0 -
I don't know if you are familar with the Taurus handguns but the revolvers all feal the same, weather there a 45LC or 2in 22 once it's in your hand you feal like your were born with it. the Judge has a softer handle, and when you pick it up it feals heavy but its a medium sized handel and it fits very nicely. 0 -

The only Taurus I've shot is a model 85 in 38spl. Nice little gun.
They don't have the same type of grips the Raging, Tracker or Judge series do, so I'd like to try one (Judge) out.
But with a 3-year-old soaking up what used to be my gun-funds,[:)] I'm pretty much gonna have to adapt what I have.0 -

Lead bullets won't damage steel rifling, though as mentioned above, they can clog it up with leading, especially at high velocities.
105 ft-lbs is small potatoes, equivalent to a .22LR. Sure you'd get 30 projectiles instead of 10, but each of the 30 would be far less powerful, have less penetration, a shorter range and lower accuracy.
I don't see what you'd gain with these rounds.
If you want to limit overpenetration, you're probably better off with pre-fragmented rounds.0 -
Yeh I dont really see the need to use this ammo certainly not for defence I have used it for feral cats, coons and possum. they get into the barns and you dont really want to shoot holes in the walls but you can shoot a bird shot load and not have to worry about doing much damage. 0 -

Another option if you can find the moulds is stacking lightweight wadcutters. I remember reading about this in an old handloader book and saw a mold for a stubby wadcutter bullet(44 cal) on ebay once. Most likely a custom mold would be required. 0 -
The problem with using this round for protection would be the probablity of the intruder sueing for damages 0 -

Not if it didn't connect (because the point of aim is off and the intrinsic accuracy of these rounds is low).
And even if it did connect, it wouldn't be as much of a "deterrent" as a standard round would be.
Would you rather get in the head with three .22s or one .357 magnum? That's a "no-brainer" (heh!) to me, considering the different penetrations of the two rounds.
Why would you want to shoot someone in the face with a less than lethal round anyway? That way you get all of the liability of using deadly force, without the benefit of the most effective round for the gun you are using.
If you are looking for a less lethal alternative to a full power round, then the better alternative is MACE or a Taser, not a weakened bullet. If you are concerned about overpenetration, why not use a pre-fragmented round, or go to a lesser caliber?
To me these trick rounds are more of a curiosity than anything else. I wouldn't stake my life on one if better conventional rounds were available.0 -
I have loaded 38 spl and 357 cases for years with cast .36" cast round ball. I don't load them hot and they group fairly tight. I put 2 in a 38spl and 3 in a 357 mag. I crimp the neck in the middle of the front ball. 0 -

I also read one a few years ago....they had molds (I think it was Lyman) in .357. Called them "tuna cans" and you could load 2 in a .38 spcl case and 3 in a .357 mag. I would rather do that then buckshot...but just me.0 -
I have an original MIL Thunder Five pistol.
It fires 45LC or 410 buck shot, and will destroy a rattlesnake at 15 feet.
I've tried ratshot and snake shot in other calibers and guns, but the noise alone the Thunder Five makes is enough to scare a snake (or perp) to death!0 -

looks very accurate to me, thats exactly where i thought it would be
a guy i shoot bowling pins with loads 2 158 grain wadcutters in a .357 maximum he gets a 2-4 inch spread at 10 yards0
