Are (same diameter) scope mounts universal?
Last night I posted a question about buying a Savage Rifle w/ scope from Wally world.
The scope is a Simmons (I think) 40mm. I have a Leupold 40mm I'd like to mount in its place.
Can I use the mount and rings that come with the rifle or would I have to purchase new ones?

If the scope TUBE diameter is the same, probably either 1" or 30mm then you can use the same rings. If the objective diameter is the same, you can probably use the same bases. Be sure to check bolt clearance if it is a bolt action rifle. 0 -

The eye relief between a Simmons 3-9x40 and a Leupy 3-9x40 may be, and probably different. That being the case, one may have adequate bolt clearance with medium rings, the other may need highs.0 -

The base (or bases if they're two piece) should be fine. The rings will be fine if both scopes are the same size tube and the ring height should be fine if both are 40mm on the objective end. You'll need to consider where the adjustment turrets sit on the tubes so as to be able to have enough adjustment back and forth to have a proper eye relief that fits you once you tighten down the rings. 0 -

Eye relief has little to do with scope height. The Diameter of the Objective lens dictates that a minimum height must be observed...then the bolt clearance is checked.
Odds are very good a direct interchange is possible.
No need to remove the bases...just check the screws for tightness. Actually, using a small screw removable Loc-Tight is a good idea to ensure there is no chance of loosening...0 -
Remove the bases. Clean the screws and put blue threadlocker on them before reinstalling. I have seen entirely too many combos with loose bases. Remember, threadlocker does not go on the ring screw only the base screws. 0 -

When you have to move the scope forward due to longer eye relief it does.

Yes the mounts are usable if it has the WEAVER style bases. CUBS, that's called the ocular, not the eyebell. 0 -
Chances are that you can use the same hardware. The bases(weaver style, I assume) can be used again. I'd imagine there aren't enough differences in your scopes to need different rings.
I'd recommend Burris Signature or Warne Rings if $20-25 out of pocket won't hurt you.0 -

Second the cub man on Burris Signature rings. Particularly if you are not yet very experienced (good eyes huh?, not me[:(]), and not equiped to lap the rings then the Signature rings, which have plastic inserts are especially easy to get right. 0 -
Damnit
I bought the rifle, brought it home and got to work switching the scopes. As expected, the rings fit just fine.
Then came the problem. The two scopes are shaped differently. The factory scope is a bit longer than my Leupold. I can mount the scope, but I have two problems.
1) The base doesn't allow enough movement for me to set the proper eye relief
2) The only way to get the scope in place required pushing the rear ring up against the scope magnification dial (I think thats what its called). I can't adjust the scope.
I think I need a new mount. Suggestions welcomed0 -
All you need is a set of WEAVER off-set rings. Put the off-set ring on the rear. You can't use a set of dual off-set rings. Only get the one that has only one off-set ring and a standard ring in the pack.
