KIRKWOOD, Mo. - A man known for confrontations with city officials killed five people at a city council meeting in suburban St. Louis Thursday night before he was shot to death by police.
Two Kirkwood police officers and three people attending the meeting were killed by the gunman, who rushed the council chambers and began firing as he yelled "Shoot the mayor!" according to St. Louis County Police spokesman Tracy Panus.
Two others were wounded, including Mayor Mike Swoboda. Two council members reportedly were shot, but it was not clear if they had been killed.
The gunman was identified by NBC affiliate KDSK of St. Louis and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch as Charles "Cookie" Thornton, known for confrontations with city officials.
Thornton was barred from City Council meetings but had made it known he would be at Thursday night's zoning meeting, KDSK reported, and extra police were assigned ahead of time.
Panus said the incident began about 7 p.m. CT when the gunman killed one officer outside the city hall, then walked into the chambers and shot another.
KDSK said the shooter fired at City Attorney John Hessel, who tried to fight off the attacker by throwing chairs. The gunman then moved behind a curved desk where council members sit and fired at them.
Swoboda, council members Michael H.T. Lynch and Connie Karr, and Public Works Director Kenneth Yost were shot, St. Louis Post-Dispatch correspondent Janet McNichols told the newspaper.
Swoboda was in critical condition Thursday night in the intensive-care unit of St. John's Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur, hospital spokesman Bill McShane said, declining to discuss the nature of the injuries. McShane said another victim, Suburban Journals newspaper reporter Todd Smith, was in satisfactory condition.
Thornton fled the building and was then shot to death outside by police.
About 30 people were in the council chambers, the Post-Dispatch reporter said.

I could say I got out just in the nick of time, but in fact I moved out of Kirkwood 30+ years ago. Went to college there and lived there almost 10 years. Very nice little burb, with a couple of disturbing citizens. Very sad. 0 -
This guy's whole family must be a bunch on nut cases. They had a brother of his on the news defending his insane actions, saying how he was justified, etc. etc. What a sick bunch of aholes! 0 -

You know, after I read about how Cookie constantly violated the city laws, and reacted with anger when called on that, and how a few members of his family spoke out and somewhat justified his murderous rampage, I could not help but think that behavior fits the profile of a particular racial group. in this case i don't think it's a black thang, but i do beleive that they do most of the daily shootings, and are overall responsible for the call to gun control, there are shootings in the hoods of saint louis every single day, recently they even shot up the funeral of a guy that was shot in a drive by a few days earlier0 -

Notice how he took out the threats first, the police officers who he knew would be armed. Had a member of the public or even a city employee been carrying concealed they may have been able suprise the shooter and take him out becuase they were not percieved as a threat. 0 -

No.actually it has long been my observation that many people in a particular racial group have an entirely different defination of right and wrong, good and evil, lawful and unlawful than can be considered rational and reasonable. If you read and watch various sources carefully, you will see this anti-social attitude displayed again and again.
One example was a member of this particular group who was on trial from commiting a burglarly when the male home owner was home. The burglar was physically attacked by the home owner and a fight insued. The home owner was injured, the burglar was arrested. In court, after being found guilty and being sentenced, the burglar flew into a rage when he got an extra sentence because he hurt the home owner.
His explanation of why he didn't deserve punishment for hurting the home owner was because the home owner attacked him and he was merely defending himself.
With such twisted reasoning and logic like that, I don't see how that racial group is ever going to climb out of their hole and join the civilized world.0 -

Exactly. And because so much of society frowns on carrying concealed firearms, did you catch how that one attorney had only chairs to throw in an attempt to defend himself?
It is pathetic when society is so strict on the peaceful, lawful citizens either carrying concealed or carrying in govt.places that attorney was reduced to only being able to take a chair to a gunfight.0 -
