    If they want an "incident" who are we to dissappoint them.

    I say if they drop boxes in the water in front of our ships again, then let them have it. 5" guns should do a good job on their patrol boats.

    If they want to persist, we should be able to destroy their entire navy in about 6 to 8 hours.

    Iranians are cowards, thats why they turned around. I wonder what was found in the boxes. Im sure they didnt just leave them floating.

    i have no doubt that the "west" will have to do something about iran eventually...common sense says to do it before they get atomic weapons!...if i were the commander of a warship and they got to close to me i would give them one warning over the radio, then one shot across their bows, and if that didnt work, they would be shark food...the skipper of any ship has an obligation to protect his ship and its crew first...i would have no respect for anyone who put his crew`s lives in danger because he didnt want to spark an "international incident"

    Careful, boys. In 1964 North Vietnamese pt boats attacked U.S. destroyers in the Tonkin Gulf, this incident was the justification for the escalation of the Vietnam War.
    Turned out the incident was fabricated.
    Of course I know Bush and Cheney wouldn't lie to us to get us into an unnecessary war.

    I realize they (US warships) have a series of warning etc. they must go through before the fire but 500 yards is awfully close.

    You know better than to believe what the news folks tell you. Their credibility has been suspect for a lot of years now.

    Who are they to be able to determine what 200 yards is?

    Personally, I wouldn't trust an Iranian vessel of any kind within a mile. One warning and then shark food. Didn't those folks load an airliner with bodies and fly it at one of our Naval Vessels and try to make it into an international incident when we used an air defense missile against it?

    The Islamic Republic of Iran has been at war with the USA since the inception of that nation and the seizing of American diplomats as hostages.

    Bush and/or Cheney had nothing to do with that incident, with the bombing of the US Marine barracks in Beirut, or with numerous other instances of Iranian sponsored terrorism against the USA.

    "Death to America" is the unofficial motto of the Khomeinist revolutionary gov't, and they still chant it at rallies. That has nothing to do with Bush or Cheney (or Clinton, or Bush I, or even Reagan) either.

    Today's incident was the Iranians "counting coup", trying to see how close they could get to a US vessel without getting killed trying. They were testing their time windows and our rules of engagement.

    Their arrogance is almost funny, but I wonder WHY the boats were allowed to get as close as they got. Have we learned nothing? Blow 'em out of the water!

    David< I agree 100%. I will make this prediction, I'll bet they don't get any more gunboats within 200 yds of another American warship. This may be a lesson learned within the next two - three days. These guys are slow learners. Tom

    Two thousand yards is considered close, so five hundred yards is pretty close.

    I don't know what their motive was, but it appears to me to be one of two things. Either their policy makers are insane or they have uncontrollable insane people in their navy. Either one is bad news.

    Hard to believe that small gunships would go near a Navy ship which could easily destroy it. Perhaps some propaganda to justify another quagmire war with Iran?

    anyone remember the USS Cole? sheesh I can't belive they would let those little boats anywhere near ours after that. I'm just as sick of these camel jockeys as they are of us-lets just get it over and done with already. It's no wonder we have a war that goes on and on because dumb politicians tie the hands of our soldiers when it comes to rules of engagement. They are more worried about baseball players taking steriods instead of winning a war and catching OBL which I'm sorry to say-should have been done by now too--but I forgot, Mission Accomplished!

    I was thinking that maybe they did it on purpose to check our reflex
    time. What would be our reaction to their action and the time line
    before we did something. Maybe we're being tested. The straits have
    always been a dangerous place. God help us if we got a carrier in
    there and they were able to close down the straits. Don't forget, they
    also have diesel subs.

    When Travis was running convoy security in Iraq, 100 meters was a kill zone for any civilian vehicle. Anyone got that close after being honked at, and having flares shot at him, he got .50 caliber rounds through the radiator. If the vehicle continued, the rounds went through the windshield.

    I beg to differ with the reporter. An official speaking on condition of anonymity is not official confirmation. I don't doubt that it happened, I'm just saying it hasn't been officially confirmed.
