17 HMR Auto Pistol by High Standard

I had posted that I was looking for a .17 auto pistol and I found one today following a tip in another thread. It is the old AMT II now being made by High Standard. The price tag is close to $700 but I'm still intrigued. If anyone has any experience with the NEW AMTs I'd love to here it.

The .17 is not listed as a chambering on the AMT page but it does appear on the Price List page.

    Those 22WMR pistols were junk, and un reliable. They had a gas assisted action.

    It does sound like some people struggle finding ammo to make them cycle and others have feed problems due to bad mags. But when I search the threads here I find that most people like them. But I don't see anybody who has the .17.

    Excel Arms makes a pistol and rifle in both 22wmr and 17hmr, and their website claims a 22wmr conversion kit for 1911s "coming soon" - I imagine that if that works, a 17 version wouldn't be far off...

    I see the last post on this thread was in Jan 2008. Has anybody this past year experienced the excelarms accelerator .17 hmr? It's reasonably priced but I would like to hear any pros or cons before parting with my money.

    If it's a brand new High Standard, I'd avoid it. They're not what they used to be when they were still a Connecticut company.

    Lew, Please don't try to harvest one of those elk with a .17[:0][:D]

    And especially if it is a High Standard. IMHO, Anything stamped
    High Standard is junk.

    I have one of the new High Standard built AMT's in 22 mag. Had some feed/ejection issues at first. Sent it back, still had some problems. Then just put about 500 rounds thru it and it seems to be broken in now. cycles fine! It does like the 40 grain ammo as compared to the lighter 34 grain stuff. Overall I'm very happy with this piece, even though it is pretty pricey.
    As to the 17 caliber. My last contact with the company was probably in may or june. At that time the 17 caliber was not yet available, and customer service rep could not give me a when, or even an if it would become available. Might be worth a phone call.
    If you do deal with them, be forewarned, not many dealers have accounts with them, most business is done directly with factory and shipped to your dealer. Just make sure they have a piece on hand before you release funds. I ordered and paid for mine, then found out they would not be tooling up to make the automag II for over 3
    0 days. Ended up being about 45 days before I finally got my pistol.

    I also have one of the Excell Accelerator pistols in 22 mag.
    Very much a handful, not the classic looks of an automag, but much cheaper, about $ 400. VERY accurate. Will shoot rings around the Automag. Also after about 100 rounds, I had no feed/ ejection issues. Not at all picky about what I feed it like the AMT is. The 17 caliber is also available now.

    AsI said I can't speak about the 17 caliber in either piece, but this is my experirnce with the 22 mag from each company. Hope this helps some.

    I've looked at the Taurus Tracker and don't want another revolver. I have the Taurus 38 and a S&W model 65-3 357. The sleek look of the Acclerator has me hooked. I know it will be expensive to toss those little loads down range but I wanna.....
    Just don't want to spend the bucks without a little assurance that it will eject properly.
    The 22 mag revolver I have from Heritage is fun to shoot but it's a pain to load. I won it in a raffle and it turned out to be very accurate, though.

    That helps me some. Just because 22mag is good doesn't necessarily make the 17hmr good but it sure increases the odds. For the price I think I'll go ahead and get one. Then I'll be able to come back and report on the performance. Thanks.

    tsr1965 - you know not! Automag II are great pistols. mine is accurate and reliable with many brands - it was NOT gas assisted! there are dimples in the chamber for the brass to flow into to slow the ejection timing. If you don't know what your're talking about, don't!
