I might be stuck (freezing rain)

How unrealistic is it to hope to drive a few hundred miles in some freezing rain conditions?


I have elected to stay in Hot Springs and wait out the bad weather.


I will say that in probably the last five years or so, I haven't really driven in anything much beyond a light frost on the windshield!

I want to go home for a day or two if it's possible, but I don't want to be the idiot who wrecks a car because they were trying to drive home!

This is definetly not the worst situation I've ever been in, but I still think I'm going to end up on the short end of the deal. As far as my spare time goes.

I am in Hot Springs AR right now and I should be leaving sometime tomorrow afternoon, so I would be home in Fort Worth by seven or eight on Friday night.

The weather is forecast to have freezing rain pretty much from Hot Springs to Fort Worth until sometime on Saturday.

So really it's just a day, but I was going to be turning right back around and driving to Huntsville Arkansas on Sunday and I would have been there until Wednesday.

The weather is supposed to be nice by Sunday.

So I think if I get stuck I'm just going to spend the weekend here in Hot springs and drive up to Huntsville on Sunday.

The down side to all of this is I will get into Fort Worth Wednesday night, then fly out again on Friday (to Colorado Springs) and I will be there until the following Wednesday night.

    If you were going for an extended stay I would say that you should wait it out, but sence your just going for he day, it is really not worth the risk, why take the chance for a few hours of fun?

    I can remember the trip that cemented my thinking on this one. We were driving in a blizzard behind a snow plow; visibility was about zero and suddenly I thought: do they want to see me so badly that they might want to see me dead?

    If the roads are bad, don't travel if you don't have to.

    We are suppose to get some of that wintry mix Friday afternoon. Just drive carefully.

    Sounds like you have already made up you mind. Dont drive too fast. The majority of wrecks in these conditions is because of speed. keep testing your brakes. pack food and clothes in case you get stuck. Godspeed.

    I "wimped out". I am spending an extra day here in Hot Springs, with hopes of Returning to Fort Worth Tomorrow.

    I knew the weather was a little foul when the company I was visiting sent thier employees home for the day around ten this morning!

    Stay where you are at. No one should be on the road in freezing rain unless it's an emergency. If you do have an emergency, it would behoove you to have chains on all 4 tires and 4WD...Seriously.

    Take it from some one who knows....STAY PUT!!!

    Driving in freezing rain is on the same stupidity level as playing chicken with a train...

    The rain freezes as soon as it hits the pavement and you end up with a thin sheet of ice covering the road....sure you can drive on it with any luck, but chance it?...not if you value your life or your families...

    By the way, IF you start to slide on that sheet of ice, you will only pick up speed, you wont slow down any till you come to a full stop....
    usually in a snowbank or up against a tree..

    Hot Springs isn't a bad town to be stuck in. Where are you staying? Last summer we spent a week in The Arlington. Go get a massage and bath. Stop at the lobby bar and have a drink or three. Enjoy!!
