Weird debit card situation
I fueled my car tonight using a debit card to pay at the pump. I watched the receipt as it emerged from the pump and grabbed it. At the same time I noticed on the pump that I'd pumped a little over 10 gallons. I didn't think I'd been that low on fuel. I stuffed the receipt in my wallet and drove off.
Now I'm looking at the receipt: $44 and change. Oh, and it says 14 gallons, when I KNOW I pumped between ten and eleven. (I drive a Subaru Impreza--which is a sub-compact takes 11.....maybe 12 gallons max). Next step, check the debit card number on the receipt: it doesn't match my debit card, nor the only credit card in my wallet either. Finally, the time stamp on the gas receipt is 25 minutes too early.
1) If the previous user managed not to close their transaction then that means they only pumped four gallons of gas, which seems unlikely.
2) Also, why wouldn't the pump have been showing 14 gallons if it billed for 14 gallons?
I'll call the gas station tomorrow (they're closed now) and also my bank, but I can't imagine what happened here. Does any of you have any ideas how this happened, or what (else) to do about it?
I might start using my credit card for pay at the pump. I feel a little better protected that way. I'm just hoping somebody didn't manage to fuel their Explorer on my card!

I have had that happened once....what it was in my case is the last person that pumped gas didn't take their recipt and I got it so that ment that the next person got my recipt....I think....but I cheked my account and the amount that I pumped matched the amount that was debited from my account. If I were you I would check the bank first. 0 -
I like cash.Never use a card. 0 -
could be the printer is screwed up and your receipt is still inside the pump till the next guy pays.I've had that happen to me. 0 -
check your bank and see what was actually charged. chances are it's correct and you just got the wrong reciept. hey, at least you got a reciept. nothing worse than paying at the pump to save time only to have the pump say "see cashier for reciept" kinda defeats the purpose of paying at the pump... 0 -

That is odd, I had a similar thing happen last Saturday as well, My slip was over the listed tank capacity as well..I just figured that that the info on the tank was incorrect!!
Something to watch out for? I'd be keeping those receipts0 -
A couple of months ago when I had a similiar thing happen and tried to get it straightened out, the local off-duty cop there that night simply beat me with his metal baton. Broke my shoulder and tore up some muscles. When I came here to ask for advice, all I got was flamed. Hope you have better luck. 0 -
Everybody (and there were a few of you--Boliver's wife being the first) who suggested I just got the wrong receipt appear to have been correct. My bank shows a $30-and-change charge from the gas station, which is right where it should be. Somebody out there is running around with my receipt. Maybe they fueled a moped and are irate, or maybe they fueled an Explorer and think they hit the jack-pot. In either case, they're wrong.
drsck: I hope your luck improves.
Zebra: There are lots of good tips in that link you provided. I have to take issue with this, though: they also suggest that using a credit card gives you a "float period" between when you make the purchase and when you have to pay for it. I guess for those few people who have interest-bearing checking accounts that might make sense. But to the vast majority of the people I know, it's just another trap.
Anyway, thanks all, for your input.0
