Rifle authentication HELP!

The saga continues. Some may remember that I recently received a few heirloom guns from the estate of a relative.

It turns out that the Mannlicher was not a Mannlicher, but a Commission 88 of unknown origin (I'm still trying to figure out who made that one).

Then I got the original paperwork on the Westley Richards. Basically, for about $100, WR will provide copies of their ledgers and an authentication letter for any gun they made, if you can give them the serial number.

I paid for this service, gave them the serial number and got records indicating that my WR, SN XXXX should have been a 12 GA shotgun. The WR rifle in my possession is a .450 #2 tilting block action.

HUH?

I don't believe this is a counterfeit, because it's not been treated as a collector rifle. It shows signs of hard use.

I've contacted WR to ask if they can help me resolve the issue but have yet to hear back from them.

Any ideas? The SN is very clear and doesn't appear to have been altered on my rifle.

Any help is appreciated.

    That has occurred to me. But I have xerox copies of their original ledger. If you think of it as a database, from left to right it reads:

    Order date
    SN
    Barrels
    Action
    Actioned by
    Stock
    Finisher
    Weight
    Sold to
    Date

    And most of those fields are filled in as the information becomes available. So there should have been SEVERAL opportunities to discover such an error.
