I tend to agree with you, but I remind myself that she is still somebody's daughter.

This is one of the things that really torques me about us Americans. We support an entire class of people who do nothing more for us than entertain us. That's all. They aren't curing cancer or building a better mousetrap. They sing, or act, or simply excel at self-promotion. And we worship them, we throw tons of money at them, we ponder their every move, every word. And we pay them well for this. They live a higher lifestyle than the majority of us, with staff at their every bidding, they need do nothing more than just be.
Then when they start believing their own press, and that the rules of a polite and functional society don't apply to them, we do love to tear them down off their pedestal with even more enthusiasm than we placed them there in the first place.

Nobody asks to become mentally ill. At the end of the day she is still a human being who is suffering. She deserves nothing less than sympathy.

I'm not a Brittany fan or hater.

But I sure do wish the press would leave her alone. She may be a train wreck , but the dam press sure isn't helping her situation ether.

she did have some top hits, and made herself some cash, as far what is happening to her now i think it may be postpartum depression that happens after a few kids to some women, that and maybe combined with the fact she skipped having a childhood from age 11 on, and was thrown into a work schedule that would kill most adults

    she needs a break

But you see, the thing is... I don't think she is mentally ill. I think this is the result of drug/alcohol use, bad decisions, and constantly being in the public eye. If she did have a life long mental illness, we would have heard reports long ago of her seeing psychologist since she was 5 or 10 years old.

She started doing more and more racy things because that's what many fans wanted. She could have told them to go to hell and not have dressed up in skimpy string bikini's, showing her boobs and buns to everyone.

If you're going to rise to prominence in this country, you'd better learn how to protect your privacy before hand. Unfortunately for her it seems she doesn't make much effort at disguise other than sun glasses.

I do agree though that the press should leave her alone. They already have her address, so they follow her everywhere. Having her problems exposed to the world doesn't help her self esteem. But as for everything else, she chose to get herself into this mess.

All in all, she was nothing more than a child (with a child's emotional structure) when she was thrust into stardom. Big blame rests on the shoulders of her money grubbing agent/promoter whomever that person, or persons were at the time. Perhaps it was the parents lack of foresight that got her in deeper, and deeper...till it was too late.

How many of us, as adolescents, were thrust into similar circumstances? I'll venture a guess that no one reading this has.

It's a given that she was going to trip a circuit-breaker. In this case, it was sooner, not later, as in Marilyn Monroe.

.....poor kid, is what I feel towards her at the moment. Joe

I think it is time that the entertainment community starts to police itself. Limiting work schedules, establishing financial trusts for underage entertainers, etc. Maybe not so many of the young stars would self distruct. Of course it will never happen cause it's all about how much money can be made TODAY.

I know she has her problems and I know America needs its periodic updates on those problems, but I just wish they would start a separate TV program, call it Access Hollywood or Entertainment Tonight, or something like that, and have some news on the TV News Programs.

First, we need entertainment, and we need to pay somebody to provide that for us. OK, maybe we don't need it, but I'd argue that on the balance, entertainment has the potential to be a positive force in our society. At its best, entertainment is high art. At its worst it is.......well, we could argue about that but lets just say "Springer" for the sake of argument.

Second, I agree with you if you're saying we pay these people WAY TOO MUCH. I'm not sure how that happens, but I believe it's a problem that's developed since about 1970. (Please don't ask me to justify that, it's just my impression).

Third, we tear the entertainers down with such enthusiasm either because 1) we resent that they're so damned wealthy and do so damned little, 2) we, like the ancient Romans, find it amusing to throw a person into a closed space with hungry carnivores (that's paparazzi, folks) and watch the carnage, or 3) it's a 30/70% mix of of numbers 1 and 2 above.

Crap....with the $$ she has, if she REALLY wanted some privacy, she could buy all she wanted.

No law that says she has to live in Beverly Hills or Kalif.

I'm thinkin a 5000 sq. ft. home / 1000+ acre ranch in Montana, just might afford her some privacy.

Train wreck or not.....she's made her decision.

Ding, ding, ding....we have a winner!!!

It's not that they are tormented by all the attention; it's that they're addicted to it. They can't live without it.

There's no paparazzi in Montana, and do you know why? Because there isn't the density of ego-maniacs to support their ambulance chasing lifestyle.

I, for one, have not one iota of sympathy for Britney Spears, or any of the other 'whoa is me' Hollywood freaks. She made her bed; now she get's to lie in it...literally and metaphorically.

Yeah... somebody mentioned she was "thrust" into this style. I doubt it. More like she went to try outs with talent agents... casting couch - or whatever the heck it is. That's why there's this american idol show now. If you don't want to write checks you can't cash - don't go to the show?

I think when she first came to popularity, she was at least a teenager. If you're 13, whether you're actually mature or not; you're likely educated enough to know some about this country and how life works. Doesn't mean you know about all of the disadvantages of being a celeb. But... it isn't like she was JonBenet Ramsey - 5 year old little girl being taken advantage of by her parents, and not really much choosing to participate in this stuff.

And uh, let's not forget that are many actors and celebs out there that don't wind up in pysch wards... Though at least a 1/5th of them are arrested or go into rehab for drug/alcohol abuse.

She had no childhood. Her stagedoor parents dragged her to acting classes and singing lessons and took her to every audition in Hollywood trying to make her into a star.

Well, they succeeded. She's a star. She's also a nonfunctioning human being largely due to their actions.

    Very sad.

Because we have a morbid tendency to want to "watch the train wreck".

You are driving down the road. You see an accident up ahead and a body covered with a sheet. Who among us is not tempted to rubberneck.

It's a common practice. But uh, where did you hear the term "rubberneck" ?
