When you say VIN number you are saying vehicle identification number number. Sorry I can't help with the check, not a leo, and I would think it could get a leo in trouble, but I don't really know. 0 -
No, not looking for people or about people. I'm curious to see if the two vehicles I currently own have ever been crashed and also if a vehicle we are looking to buy has ever been in an incident.[;)]

Usually if you go to a popular car forum, someone on there has a CarFax account, and if you ask nicely they'll check for you.

There are quite a few Free VIN checks you can do yourself online...and some are stating they will do the accident lemon hx in the VIN number.... 0 -

Yes, running a VIN without a valid law enforcement reason will get a cop in trouble, but more to this post, it will not tell if it has been crashed, or information like that.
Carfax reports come from repair facilities and insurance companies, and include that type of info. LEO or more specifically NCIC checks do not.0 -

We've got a 99 Acura that we bought used. The dealer ran a Carfax on it for us. I showed nothing. First time I detailed the car, I found a couple of places that clearly showed repair work. No problems with the car, but it had been repaired. Carfax in my opinion is worthless. 0 -
carfax is great for tracking warranty work, or any insurance work. However, if someone does not make an insurance claim or does their own maitenance Carfax is in fact worthless. 0 -
Just take the vehicle to a reputable body shop and have them look it over. If it has had major repairs, a good tech will spot them. If it has been repaired well, and the tech cannot find anything wrong, you shouldn't worry about the mechanical end, however, electronic damage is not quite as obvious and therein lies the problem. Some electronic problems might not show up for a while, but even new cars can have e-problems down the road [pardon the pun]. 0
