No charges against activist who pulled guns on registered sex offender
Prosecutors have dropped the gun charges that were filed against a Florida activist after she was accused of pulling two guns on a registered sex offender in Davie, Fla.
Valerie Parkhurst allegedly brandished a pistol and a shotgun during an altercation on a public street with Dale Weeks, a convicted rapist, and his girlfriend.
South Florida Sun-Sentinel sums up the case: Police had said Parkhurst threatened to kill Weeks and his girlfriend, Maria Rodriguez, when the couple drove onto a street where Parkhurst was handing out sex offender warning fliers. The street was a couple of miles from Weeks' home, where Parkhurst had passed out fliers about him earlier and had words with Rodriguez. During the confrontation in the 4600 block of Southwest 66th Avenue, a dead-end street, Parkhurst said she thought the couple was following her and asked them to back up. The couple, who told police they were heading to a store and made a wrong turn, said they had trouble backing up.
The Sun-Sentinel quotes from a prosecution memo that says Parkhurst acted in self-defense and notes that there's "no likelihood of conviction" given the facts in the case.
Weeks has said his girlfriend was too scared to drive away after Parkhurst pointed a 9 mm Glock at their vehicle. "It's a vigilante-style move," he told The Bradenton Herald. "She has no right to blow me away."

This is a tough situation. Quite frankly, reading ONLY the article, it sounds like she may have overreacted. Apparently the police thought otherwise, so I distrust the reporter for not telling all that happened.
I have mixed feelings about this hue-and-cry over sex offenders who have served their time. It is a good thing that they be known and watched, and I understand that the recidivism (sp?) rate is high for such crimes. But if they are that untrustworthy, they shouldn't be let out of prison. Alternatively, I think anyone who's finished their prison time should be given a chance to straighten up. I have also heard some tales of people having to report as "sex offenders" for milder reasons than you might think. Looks like this guy screwed up in '96, but not since.
Then again, mess with my grandkids and you disappear. I can think of some very remote places where you can hide a body for a long, long time.0 -

go pull a gun on a "predator" and feel good about yourself. just becareful on the drive home, a real criminal might kill you.....and serve less time than a "sexual predator"0 -

There are sex offenders and sex offenders. This incident appears to be a case of he intended to scare her but she scared him. He said she didn't have a right to blow him away. I don't think she did blow him away. Just made him reevaluate the wisdom of following her down the street.
I'm all for letting sex offenders pay their debt to society. Let them do their time in prison. But if it is somebody who rapes a member of my family, after they have paid their debt to society, it's time to settle up with me.0 -

Urinating in public or having sex with your underage fiance who happens to be only six months younger than you can get you labeled as a sex offender. You can't put much stock in the sex offender status unless you know the particulars of the crime.0 -

The current crop of DUI laws are over the top and driven by money not concern. If you want to stop drunk driving place cops outside bars and watch who walks out staggering. I DO NOT drink and drive. The level of impairment at .08 is negligible at best. Many factors cause death in car crashes not just drunks. Drunks are a problem but the excessive drive to pass laws have done NOTHING except cost Americans millions of dollars paying lawyers and insurance companies.0 -

794.011(3) Commits Sexual Battery; Upon Person 12 Or Older Without Consent And In Process Threatens Or Uses Deadly Weapon Or Force Which Would Most Likely Cause Serious Personal Injury
(3) A person who commits sexual battery upon a person 12 years of age or older, without that person's consent, and in the process thereof uses or threatens to use a deadly weapon or uses actual physical force likely to cause serious personal injury commits a life felony, punishable as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, s. 775.084, or s. 794.0115
(1) As used in this chapter:
(a) "Consent" means intelligent, knowing, and voluntary consent and does not include coerced submission. "Consent" shall not be deemed or construed to mean the failure by the alleged victim to offer physical resistance to the offender.

NO NO NO!!!
The correct way to act if you are confronted by a Predator is to make sure you have no obvious weapons on your person. If you do, throw them away as soon as you realize what the situation is!
Now, if you MUST confront them, make sure it's with a blade if they know you're coming. That way he'll use his spear or something and you at least have a CHANCE of scoring a hit before you get killed.
If possible, call in Danny Glover or the governer of California first...
