M1 Garand
what would it take to build a garand out of some mix match parts, stock, receiver, stock parts, barrel, and what else would i need? and can i even do it? i can strip my guns, basic, for cleaning and stuff, and im mechanically inclined, should i be able to do it? and this thing is definately going to be a shooter, not looking for a beauty here.

Well after years of debating and much looking around I ordered an M1 from the Garand Guy, and picked it up this morning from my ffl. I gotta say, I'm very pleased with it, though i havent shot it, but from what i see it looks good. I got his premium grade and its exactly as was described, nice wood(a few minor marks), the metal is very nice, fit and finish seems really good. and muzzle wear is (from what i can measure) almost identical to my Remington 7600 that only has had about 200 rounds through it. It came with a manual, 10clips, and a 1 year warranty. I paid only marginally more then was being asked for the trainwrecks i saw at the last gunshow. I'll post pictures when i can.

Wanted to share with all of you that I had my first ever experience this past Saturday firing my friends Springfield Armory M1 Garand. I was very excited when he told me he had brought it for me to have a go at it. I've never seen one in real live action so this was kind of in a weird way something very special for me. You know, you hear and see so much about the Garand that your expectations are set so high so it's hard not to feel that way.
My first impression of the Garand was that it packed quite a punch. Defiantly gave me more of a snap in the arm than my 7.62 X 54R Nagat does. I like that though! This also is the first time ever I've fired the 30 06 round so that was a pleasant surprise too. I can't put my finger on it but I don't know what it is that I like so much about the magazine being ejected when firing the last round. That "pinging" sound will forever be recorded in my mind.
Things that took me some time to adjust too were the peep site, and inserting another magazine. I've never been a fan of peep sites. Peep sites seem to confuse my eye, almost blocking some of my vision. My vision between the peep site and the target would blur back and fourth as if my eye could not figure out what to focus on. It took me some time to get used too. Can anyone tell me if they make a Garand without peep sites? Now inserting the magazine is a bit scary at first after you look at how massive the bolt and action are. Gave me the feeling of sticking my thumb into a shark's mouth or something. This also took some getting used to but the right amount of pressure on the bolt when inserting the magazine starts to come to you after awhile.
At first I though "man...I'm not sure if I would like the weapon for combat". Then it kind of hit me that this is not just any combat weapon that you pick up and just "go to town" with. Seems like the Garand forces you to practice with it and learn to respect it. As the day went on I started to get the feel of the Garand and it became more fun for me. I find myself more drawn to the Garand now after having my first go around with one. Not only do I desire to have one more now for it's significance and it American shaping history, but I also desire the Garand for the amount of respect and skill it takes to master it's operations.
I think it's very safe to say that there is a Garand in my future...probably more than one. I'm thinking one that has some significant history to it for my collection, and one for every day shooting.
Call me a nut case but there is some kind of a magical gut feeling I get down inside about the Garand and wanting the Garand that's very different from any other firearm. Hech...I even saved the empty cartridge from the very first round that I fired through it! Guess I need therapy!

Ok think I want to upgrade my rear sight, got my problem of the clip ejecting with 6 rounds. New spring did wonders.
But noticed my rear sight has too much movement for me to keep rounds anywhere close to group. I am going to check my book on the Garand by Duff.
But anybody have a suggestion to use.0 -

Just bought one. Never used one but thought I should have a least one. I know nothing about them but this one looks good. $650
They threw this on for free. I'm actually more pleased with the Remington 03A3.

Heh-heh, took me by surprise too. Truns out the rifle is a .308[:D] That little doohickie keeps Jethro (me) from trying to stuff a clip full of 06 ammo in the hole. I have yet to shoot it, too damned cold here, but I've got a case or two of ammo for it when the sund does decide to come out again.

Not kidding. One day I got a 1st Gen SAA Colt in 32-20 in the mail. Just showed up. And an 1873 Winchester, again 32-20. And finally, my FFL said I had a Remington Model 12 22RF rifle at his shop. Seems a feller named bigdaddyjunior thought I could use them in my book-writing research. He was right.[:D]

All four are top collector's grade - our two are the finest M1's we've ever shot. The guy's a pro!

I'm really happy with it, ive learned to field strip and everything looks good, he did a nice job parkerizing it, barrel looks good, i havent measured TE , but the MW compares to my Remington 7600 with about 200-250 rounds through her. Bore looks really nice, only found two parts that arent SA (gas cyl lock is "W" marked and trigger guard is "BMB" marked. Now just to shoot it. [:D][:D]0 -
