curfew do they work
our town passed an ordinance that instates a curfew for kids under 18....imho I don't think it will do anything but put the kids on the road drinking and partying going to other towns, or they will find places out in the country to party.....this town is so not wild to begin with, I think its a joke....when I was in Highschool most of us farm kids didn't get into to town until 10-11:00pm anyways.....what it boils down to is that our city cop wants his paycheck without putting in his hrs.
I think its bullsheet for the simple fact that we are getting more and more like a police state in this country.
If they would have started a curfew when I was running around on Saturday night, we would have made it a point to tear the town down to the ground.
This is a small town of only a few hundred people.

I really dont care what the city police say. we dont go tearing crap up, or doing anything illegal. That includes drinking, smoking, loud music after the legal time, whatever.
But if we want to go hang at walmart, or movies, or a place to eat or whatever... were going to anyways, You get pulled over they call your parents blah blah blah do you want them in jail whatever no yeah uh huh sure.
Dad sets my curfew..
On weeknights.. its 10:30.. 11 if he is generous.. thats sunday - thursday (usually)
weekends its home by 11:30 or 12... depends...
Either way, my parents gave birth to me, I dont do illegal stuff, they can decide when / if i come home.

forgot to mention, if i dont come home by set time - its a good chance that I wont be leaving tomorrow, possibly next weekend.0 -
they dont just call you the kid gets $200 fine and as do the parents get a $200 from what I understand. 0 -
I don't think you need a curfew. Parents should be taking care of their kids and not the goverment. However, I have seen bad parents who let their kids run wild all night long. So what do you do with that? 0 -

I've seen several towns here pass similar ordanances, but never heard of anyone being prosecuted for it. Iowa law has it where kids under 16 have to be off the road Sun-Thurs., by midnight and 2 am Fri. & Sat. unless they are going home from work or possess a note from their parents. Still haven't heard of any kid getting fined for it.0 -

cowdoc, find some people who think the same way and go to the next council meeting. Let them know what you think. They passed it, they can unpass it. Depending on how strongly you feel about it, this is an election year.
It sounds like an profit deal to me. Kind of like when South Boston moved their 45 MPH sign about a half mile down the road. Made a lot of money until people got used to the change.0 -
When I was a kid, my town had no curfew.
Other than stealing a couple of cars and burning down a couple of old barns, we never caused any trouble.
We did put cement blocks in grocery sacks and set them on the highway, once in a while.
And broke into some empty beach houses to get drunk and party with the girls, now and then.
It took me until I was 25 to become a semi-human being.
Curfews ???
Not in my town.
What a terrible way to wreck a child's growing experience.

talking about curfews i kinda have somthing that bugs me.are high school has open campus at noon hours i kinda wish they would make it closed campus..those dang kids at noon pile in there cars and run all over the place mostly.[ racing around] one of these times someone is going to have a bad accident and get hurt pretty bad or worse.local cop just turns a blind eye.THANKS FOR LETTING ME GET THIS RANT OFF MY BACK.. 0 -
For such a free country,it sure seems we have alot of laws and such. As for curfews,I think parents should set them.The problem nowadays though is,to many parents trying to be friends instead of parents. 0 -
I agree that it should be up to the parents to set curfews for their children, but some don't, and some are unaware.
My city has a pretty good curfew law. Besides late night hours, it also covers daytime hours when school is in session, and gives us more of a handle to deal with truants.
It also does not apply to anyone 17 or older. It also does not apply to any child who is coming and going to and from work, or church, or a family-ordered errand, or who is with a parent.0 -
i guess if we had a curfew here then instead of turning them little SOBs i caught in my driveway a few months ago loose maybe they would have hauled them to jail. (5 kids age 9-13 1:30AM) we all know they were up to no good, all the law did was warn them and sent them on there merry way.

I live in a town of 220. We have a curfew but it does no good. The only law enforcement is the county sherrif office and they won't enforce municipal laws. The kids here are free to drink, vandalize, and steal all night long-and they do. 0 -
It's a tool. Nothing else. If the parents are not doing their job, then a curfew allows the police a tool to deal with underage persons that do not have the maturity to control themselves.
And like any other tool it can be misused. If the local police are fining underage people, then there is a problem. If after a couple of curfew contacts the parents are not controlling the child, then fining the parent is the next step.0 -

It has been a long time since I was under 18. There was a curfew then. As Alpine said it was a tool. Minors knew what was expected. Parents knew what was expected and were informed if junior was out past curfew. Nunn said "...It also does not apply to any child who is coming and going to and from work, or church, or a family-ordered errand, or who is with a parent." and if I remember correctly it was that way then. I never hear of anyone being fined. With out the fines I would think it is a good thing. With fines I imagine all the minors with poor parents would be running loose with out any attention from the police but the minors of well to do parents would soon be getting attention. Also the fine would soon go up, as all taxes licenses and fines do. 0 -

talked to one city council members today told what i thought....guess they do have some problems with a few kids being out late every night so they say I haven't seen it or heard of anything going down though....told him that parents should set the curfew on their own but i guess in this day and age there are some parent that don't parent...also told him if my kids were not home at time i set, i would be out looking for them looking to put a boot in their rearend, my kids are not old enough yet to be out but one soon will be.
they also have only have first reading of the ordinance so not yet in effect....they have had quite a few complaints so guess will see what happens0 -

Back when I was a kid, my big brother, probably 17 years old at the time and back from college, and his friends got ticketed for playing basketball in a public park less than a block fom our home after 10pm.
I remember at the time being outraged. Still, it was bogus.0
