How long to dry pine before burning?
Hi Folks,
I cut down a huge pine tree this year, about 18" in diameter. How long do I need to wait before I can safely burn it in my fireplace? I'd guess at least a year? I don't want to get creosote build up. It isn't split (yet).

It will dry a lot faster if you split it.
I would give it one spring, summer, and fall.0 -
Rough rule of thumb- split- at LEAST 6 months. One year is better. HOWEVER- some woods produce more creosote than others. Pine is awfully high on that list, no matter how dry. If only one tree, probably not a big problem, but burn hot as you can. 0 -
dry pine is a dangerous thing to burn in a fireplace or wood stove because it showers with sparks much more than hard wood will . You would have the same problem burning it outdoors however. (instead of catching your home on fire you run the risk of catching grass and trees on fire.) Now if you are in the northern areas where there is snow or frost (wet conditions)burning outside right now is pretty safe. 0
