First day in the field for the pup
Had a great experience today. I have a neighbor kid, 16 years old now, who sorta adopted me about 4 years ago. We have hunted, shot, and fished together for the last four years now. Well he got himself an AKC Yellow Lab pup for Christmas, and we took him out today for the first time. Now this pup is only 2 1/2 months old. After only an hour we were shooting over the pup without even a flinch from him. He loves the shotgun, no fear of it at all. Well you should have seen this pup tracking today. Pheasants and rabbit tracks. It was really something to see. He would loose the scent, then go back and pick it up again. Really amazing for a pup that young. The boy is doing a great job so far training him too. We would sit the pup, then throw the bird and fire the gun. Well that dog would go get the bird and bring it back. Only twice did we have to take it from him. I think we got us a good dog to hunt with. We'll hit the late service tomorrow, then going walleye fishing through the ice. Tomorrow will be good too I believe.

its a pleasure to hunt over a good dog. the best ones dont have to be taught how to do it...sounds like your friend has one of those...good luck to him. 0 -

Sav99 that story reminds me of myself when I was younger with my neighbor. He was a older guy and extremely rough around the edges, but he was more of a father then my own which never bothered to come around much after my mother and father divorced. He taught me tons of information.
That's very special what you're doing in my opinion and that boy won't forget it I bet.0 -

Sounds very similar Kodiakk. The kid doesn't have a dad, and mom isn't around a whole lot. Heck I got extra time on my hands anyways. I try to teach him what my Dad taught me. Not just about shooting, hunting and dogs and such, but about life, and growing up to be a responsible American. I hold him accountable, and don't give too much slack. With his mothers permission, I bought him an 870 3.5" 12ga. last year and let him work it off to pay for it. He's came a long ways in last four years. And has made me proud more than once. That little lab pup is a good addition to the team. I'll post some pictures of the the dog later this evening. Heres a few of us shooting.

We don't have enough birds around here to worry to much about it. We do alot of water fowl hunting and rabbit hunting. If he's fortunate enough to flush a pheasant I'll take it, but there aren't many of then left around these parts.0 -

You're a good man! My pop was always to busy for stuff like that.
