Bidding on an item on GB

I finally broke down and decided to bid on an item on the auction side. Now I'm being told that I need a credit card on file just to bid? Guess I forgot about it, but why is that required to bid? Just curious.

    They require that to prevent fraud and identity theft to protect themselves as well as sellers. You could just be some 12-year-old playing games and wasting time. We're all over 12 years old although sometimes it's hard to believe reading these forums! [;)]

    That's what I figured. I hadn't tried to bid on anything until now. Thanks for the clarification.[:)]

    You must have tried to register as a seller, not a buyer. Sellers are required to register with a credit card, buyers are not.

    I stand corrected - I thought it was required of either. Still, I think it should be to prevent some kid from bidding on a gun and maybe even winning. I know he wouldn't get it but it would be a major pain.

    You don't have to have to use a credit card to buy the gun, so why should you need one to register. I can see the validity of confirming the bidders age/identity, but there's got to be another way.
