Scene of the Crime...Chicken Murder Updated
I went outside and could hear the chickens making sounds like they never made before. It sounded like they were all dying.
As I rounded the barn I spotted a large pile of feather with sporadic feather leading into the woods.
At the edge of the woods I spotted a coyote.
my blood came to a calm boil and ran back to the house, grabbed the loaded shotgun, ran back out and around where I could sneak up on coyote.
As I popped up over a pile of lumber I saw coyote 40 yards off and he was headed back to the chicken coop.
I leveled the shotgun and was going to wait for him to get in front of me and a little closer when he turned right at me and made eye contact.
BOOM
coyote down and writhing.
coyote wriths forabout 15 seconds and then stands up and is all stumbly.
I rack another shell and before I knew it he was headed the other direction 100 miles an hour and fast enough to outrun the followup shot.
Well I am one less chicken.
Now the coyotes know they are here.
Moral of the story... Make sure your shotgun is not loaded with #8 dove loads.
HEHEEE he never got the chicken after all.
The unaccounted chicken came back and is fine. Only one little bloody spot on it.

He was a little too far for the #8 shot.
I bet he got an attitude adjustment about raiding your chickens.

'yotes are tough. Was on a driven deer hunt in Georgia and one walked up. Shot him with #4 buckshot at about 40 yards. Kncked him flat. 10 minutes later he gets up to leave, he went about 10 yards and I hit him again and down it went again. Later went to view the corpse and it had crawled off, never did see it again. Probably died, had an ounce or more of lead in him, or her. 0 -
Another mistake I made was the shotgun is choked cylinder.
Full choke may have anchored it.0 -

Shot a yote following two deer during deer season with the 41 mag. Plops over on the spot. 4-5 minutes later he jumps into the air and takes off. Best I can tell I just grazed his spine and knocked him out. Another 20 seconds and I would have had a handfull of LIVE coyote. 0 -

Killing anything that weighs more than 10 pounds with birdshot at 40 yds is challenging (ask Dick Cheney about that).
Next time don't wait until the thing gets up before plugging it again (and obviously bigger shot or a slug).
My guess is that this particular coyote probably won't be coming back, its probably learned that your chickens don't taste that good! Though if there was one, there are others, and another one will show up sooner or later.0 -

I did the best I could with what I had and how the situation presented itself.[:o)]
My biggest mistake was that it has been so long ago that I was a boy scout that the "Be Prepared" moto was only a memory in this instance.0
