Who has drank/made Moonshine.I was a kid when i first took a drink.Without a doubt the worst tasting concoction i ever tried to stomach.I dont touch the stuff now,its lots harder to get now anyways.Back in the 80,s seems like every third person around here sold it.

The town I grew up in, you could buy it from the sheriff, it was the good stuff to, no rot gut "chartered" crap. But that is a place that is still about 30 years behind modern time. 0 -
I've tasted it where it was probably comparible to drink jet fuel, and
also where it went down smooth as water....either way, just a sip

I've had the good stuff and the bad stuff. The bad stuff tastes like MEK but the good was very, very smooth. In high school we used to sneak some from a friends dad and mix it with fruit punch. That stuff was horrible. Later on in life I got a hold of some that was like drinking warm water. Ended up getting that from the same friend's dad. I think he left the bad stuff out knowing we'd get it. 0 -
When I was a boy in Virginia, there was a stump just out of town (Woodbridge), where, if you left a ten dollar bill and a gallon jug, you could come back in about a half hour, and find it filled up. Kicked like a mule, according to the old guys who drank it...I only got a taste, and it seemed to be very volatile - cooled your tongue - vapors made me cough - the old farts just laughed.
Later, while a young man in Florida in the late 60s, I was offered some from who knows where, and it was VILE! Not anything like the stuff in Virginia. I often wish I couod go back and find the stump in VA, but have only passed through there twice in the rest of my life...
There is a company that is legally allowed to market moonshine, I saw a special on it on TV - forget who/where...I gotta get me some real corn likker moonshine, just for history's sake.0 -
I've bumped into a snort of Everclear a few times. Closest I've ever come to moonshine. 0 -

Hay Hand Load that legal place is in Virginia near the town of Culpeper about 60 miles from that old stump by way of the crow flies. Still as good as that stump water and Nelson County has legal Apple Jack [:0][:p][:D][:I][:o)] 0 -

As an aside, When Junior Johnson was nominated to the international Motor racing hall of fame in europe, he travelled with thirty one-quart ball mason jars, each with a "clear liquid" and a single peach half. Customs asked him to declare them, and he said "Fruit drink"!!

100 proof "Virginia Lightning" is made by Belmont Farms of Culpepper, VA. 100 proof applejack brandy, "Captain Applejack" is made and bottled in Lynchburg, VA. Both are sold in VA ABC stores. If not in stock they will order it for you. 0 -

My family has been making and being arrested for making Moonshine for years and years. Right out of Mingo swap in NC. I have tried it from many different areas around NC and VA. Good stuff!! 0 -
Went we go hunting we alway get some shine from the locals. They like to mix it with mountain dew or cinnamon schnaps. 0 -
I just happen to have about 2/3 of a quart jar in the cupboard.I met a guy that works for my Bro.in law,who knew a guy,[;)] in Ga. about 2 months ago. I grabbed 2 Qts.$10. each. Really smooth, but still burns like hell. Guy said it's around 85-95% ALCHEHOLL [^] 0 -
My brother and I drove down to Mexico on a vacation. We went into a liquor store, we were going to get some rum or tequila.
We noticed about 50 five gallon cans stacked up in the corner.
We saw that one of these cans was setting on the counter. They had a little spigot fixed to the bottom of it.
Every few minutes, a Mexican would walk/stagger in, carrying an empty glass jar, or a canteen. The clerk would fill up his container with this stuff, the guy would pay a few pesos, and off he would go.
We asked the clerk what the deal was, I spoke fairly good Spanish.
He said it was pure alcohol made from sugar cane. He said it was 192 proof!
We looked at the label on the can and sure enough, 192 proof.
We bought a 5 gallon can, it cost about seven bucks.
Now that stuff would light your fire.0 -
I have had some Tennessee shine. I would say it qualified as sippin' whiskey. Hell I couldn'd stand more than a sip.[xx(] I will stick to Single Barrel Jack. 0 -

I have to agree that the rye lightning, is waaaay better than corn liquor. Better yet if put in a charcoal barrel.
A shot glass almost full of shine, with a splash of squirt on top is good. We call them "shiny squirts".
I heard Junior Johnson is now legally bottling his own brand.
I knew a guy who got burned pretty badly, by having a flame too close to an open bottle of everclear. That stuff really tastes bad.0 -
It's easy to come by here, being on the border with W.VA. I don't drink anymore but my son enjoys it. He said it is real smooth but look out when it hits the gut. 0 -

Those days are long gone.
Moonshining is an art form. Not many people can make good shine these days and the few that do. Take a lot of pride in their product. And their product is well known. Ask anyone who lives in the western part of NC if they have heard of "Popcorn". The guy is a legend at the craft.

The thing which makes moonshine illegal is failure to pay taxes. Anybody with licenses and permits from the federal and state governments to operate a Distilled Spirits Plant, and pay all the taxes can market moonshine.
Of course then it wouldn't be moonshine, cause you wouldn't need to sneak it out of the mountains by the light of the moon. [:D]

...Turns out that Washington State Package stores sell BOTH Georgia Moon and Virginia Lightning - local store has both! So if i convert the fuel costs of going to Virginia to buy hooch, I could buy....
Anyway, I am gonna have to make a run as soon as the store open!
Too bad it is the watered down version - Georgia Moon is only 80 proof, and Virginia Lightning is only 100 proof. (SIGH)0 -
I've had some that burned all the way down and I've had some that was so smooth you could not belive it was moonshine.That was back in the 80's 0 -
When I was a yunker, we made applejack every winter...and it was very good.
