Bad check...
I've been in business for myself for ten years now and have only had one cold check until today. The first check was made good by the customer when our county attorney sent him a letter. It was for around $530.00. Today I go to the bank with a $90 check and they say it is no good. It is from a very good customer of mine who has, in the past, bought over $20,000 of stuff from me. I hate to call him and embarass him about it in fear of loosing such a good customer. What should I do?

Call him and say he needs to check with his bank and they returned a check unpaid. Maybe he has been the victim of idenity theft or something he needs to check on.
then he will know you are holding a bad check for him too. [;)]+1
Just handle it discretely with him!0 -
I agree, just call and let him know. Dont make a big deal about it unless it becomes a big deal. There are many legit reasons a "good" customer many have had a mess up. Maybe he wrote you the check and his wife pulled a bunch of money at the same time and he didnt know. Or it could be ID theft which I am sure he would really like to know.
If I had a check go bad for some reason I would sure like to know and make it right.0 -
I get a lot of bad checks in my business. I have a three step program. Polite, not polite, lawyer.
Polite occasionally gets it. Not polite is pretty much a wasted step, and lawyer ain't much better.0 -
I agree with the comments.
You will find out in a hurry if you have a problem or not.
My family has run a retail store for nearly 40 years and about half of bad checks are bookkeeping issues. Other half are a real pain.0 -
I wrote a check once for a Mobile Home to a dealer. Check came back bad to me. I was having this home delivered on a Monday. I drive up to the dealer and he said the home was still being delivered. He had called the bank and the bank OK'd it out of another account. I wrote the check from the wrong account. I felt like a fool. I asked the dealer if I got only 1/2 the home or the whole thing... jokingly.. it was a modular double wide...
Just call your customer and ask him if he wrote the check out of the wrong account?0 -
Even if I was your best customer I would want you to let me know if my check to you was bad. 0 -
Doesn't sound like the kind of customer that would do it on purpose.
Let him know, politely.
I would want to know. My bank has transfered money to the wrong account, on a number of occasions. I have ALWAYS proven it was their fault by the deposit slips. They have had to pick up any charges to my account.
Guess what, NOW they want to do away with deposit slips.
No slips, no proof. Hmmmmmm.....0 -
yes, politely..and discrete..there could be a very good reason for this ONE bad cheque...he will respect you for not ranting and raving at him.. 0 -
I have recieved bad checks about 3 or 4 times, in every case I called and was polite, with the assumtion that it was a mistake. It always was, and the customer made good right away. I guess I'm just lucky.[8D] 0 -
