Can anyone tell me the real truth about NFA rules regarding short-barreled rifles (SBR)? BATF's website isn't clear at all about registering an AR lower as a SBR and how to do that. I want to mount a 11.5" upper on a new long-barreled AR15 lower, I just want to make sure I don't go to jail for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Never having done it myself, I don't know all the specifics, but what you need is a $200 "tax stamp."

    You have to collect the correct forms from the ATF website: application to make and register a firearm, and a citizenship form.
    Then you need specific ATF fingerprint cards to take to your local Sheriff, Chief of Police, etc. He'll have to approve you first.
    Send your $200 money order to ATF and wait for their reply.
    Then you can modify the rifle. You have to mark the receiver with your name and address too.
    Then go have fun! Be sure you carry copies of your paperwork everywhere that rifle goes!

    I did mine with an 11 1/2 in. barrel and put a 5 1/2 in flash hider on the end making it a legal 16 in.<1fmj>

    Just make sure that it is permiantly attached per ATF specs or you have an UNREGISTERED SBR. Just screwing a longer FH on a short BBL does not change the legal bbl length.

    You need to make sure this is legal where you live too. It is legal by federal law but some states it is not.

    If you are going to do it yourself you will need to fill out an ATF Form 1 (making) and submit it along with a $200 check to the ATF. When the form comes back approved then you can build your SBR. You can NOT legally own the parts to do this until you have an approved Form back.

    There is a couple different theories on how to mark your SBR as some say you have to do it on the receiver, some say it is fine how it is, other now say you can mark on the BBL. I can not help you out on this part, but if you contact your local NFA branch they should be able to tell you for sure. If you can get anything the ATF tells you in writing.

    I appreciate all you wonderul people who posted some really valuable information, I'm using it and you've got me on the right path to legality. For the one who tried insult as a way to displace his own anger (wont mention any names, but his initials are KEVD18), he needs to grow up and attend a long-term anger-management class to deal with that terrible childhood he may have had.     I heard that it only cost $15 to register a SB shotgun ??

    There are 6 types of NFA firearms. 5 of the 6 require the $200 tax for transfer. 1 of the 6 AOW (Any Other Weapon) only requires a $5 transfer tax. The tax for making any NFA firearm is $200, with the exception of machineguns as they are not legal to make anymore.
