So, I finally watched "The Passion of the Christ"

And I don't want to turn this into ANY sort of religious debate. I just wanted to point out one thing that I discovered about myself, and it wasn't necessarily a religious epiphany or anything like that.

It's just that I found the movie difficult to watch. Not because of the gore/violence. Not because of the disturbing images of demons/Satan. Not because of the cruelty and terrible things people will do to one another.

I found it difficult to watch because I am so used to movies where the hero/protagonist goes through terrible hardships and trials, but you know they will triumph in the end. No matter how bad John McClain gets beat up, he wins in the end of every "Die Hard." No matter how bad the pain on Luke Skywalker's severed hand and fatherly revelations, you know he's on the good side of The Force. No matter how many aliens are invading our beautiful planet, somehow mankind and the good guys prevail and stave off the horde.

I kept feeling that during this movie, but had to keep reminding myself, No, he's not going to get up. The Romans aren't going to prevent his execution. The priests aren't going to change their mind and forgive. He's not going to get a last-minute stay after he's already nailed to the cross."

It was just odd to have to keep reminding myself that there wasn't going to be the traditional happy ending. I knew everything that was happening HAD to happen in order for me to be here where I am today. It just felt weird knowing The Happy Ending was of a different flavor this time.

Yeah, so I'm a few years late, I know. Still a good flick. :)

    I saw it in the theater when it came out. During the one scene where Jesus is taking a beating, I started to chuckle, and of course had several angry looks turn my direction.

    I wasn't chuckling at the beating though. I started thinking about the look on the Roman soldiers faces as they stood at the gates of heaven, with St. Peter standing there saying "aren't you one of the guys that beat up the boss's kid?" and them just thinking "man, I'm screwed".

    Maybe not all of them. In The Greatest Story Ever Told, there was one soldier, played by John Wayne, who looked up at the Lord on the cross, and said, "Surely, He was the Son of God." Whether that line is from legend or from Scripture, I can't say right now.

    I saw it in a crowded movie theater. When it ended, all of the people exiting, including me, had a very humble expression and said nothing. You could have heard a pin drop. It was like leaving the funeral of a close friend or relative which, in a way, it was. Regardless of your religious beliefs, it was a very powerful movie, particularly due to the fact that it was true.

    Thanks. Anyhow, that Roman confessed Christ as Lord, and therefore would have nothing to fear at the Judgement, at least according to what I believe.

    You have to think that the Roman soldier seen all this and said whast he said and then was saved. It dosen't say, but like was said, I would hate to be him at judgment haveing realized He was and didn't accept Him.

    It was hard to watch, it reminded me even more of the price that was made for even me.

    We just had a Blble study on Mathew, verse by verse. When He was crucified, the earth shook, and the sky went dark. I came to the conclusion that the earth responded to the creators blood being spilled into it. Several places it the Bible it speaks of the creation clapping their hands, the stones crying out, etc. I know it does not have a soul, but it knows its creator, to this point. Also, it obeyed and was still at His command.

    Just a few more thoughts.

    Nunn, that soldier's statement is in Scripture.

    Callktulu, I am an evangelical Christian, and haven't yet seen the movie so don't feel like the Last One. I am kinda resistant, because I know it is not an entertaining movie to watch. For the record, however, it has a happy ending. I know, 'cause I read the Book.

    Anything that comes out of Hollyweird is mostly hogwash! I don't even think about watching them.

    I own the DVD, but first saw this movie at the theater. It was very humbling to see all the blank deep in thought stairs that most viewers had upon leaving the theater.

    The movie just showed the first part. The conclusion is yet to occur, and I for one believe that when all is said & done there will be a happy ending.

    One of the things that bothered me when I went to see it, was some that took it as entertainment and went for pop and popcorn. I guess I had a reverence almost like being in church.

    That was the lat movie I ever saw in a theater. Not because of it, but just because it was to darn expensive.

    Truly, it was a very heart-wrenching film. The scourging scene was just like the good Sisters of my childhood parochial school taught us, with flesh being torn off.
    The part that truly hit at my core was the scene where Mary the mother is following Jesus through the streets as he carries the cross, and he falls.
    She has a flashback to his toddlerhood, to a time he fell, began crying, and she picked him up and soothed him.

    that was one movie i didn't mind reading {sub tittled for those that don't know}, you have to take your hat off to mel gibson for that one, very strong intense movie, made you feel like you where there

    I read somewhere that originally he wanted it to be without subtitles, but still in ancient language, feeling the characters' actions and voices would speak for themselves. For those without enough Biblical knowledge, however, I don't think enough of The Message would have gotten across.

    After the first 3 minutes I didn't hear a single crunch from popcorn being eaten. Like you said, after the movie everyone quietly left.

    I saw it to a while back. My only problem with the movie is that it did not put enough into the resurrection at the end. Course the movie did not bother me so much because I had read the book many times before and knew how it would end, it was just a matter of getting there. It followed the book of John quite well, though the parts where the devil appeared were not actually written in the Bible, but you could say he may have actually had a part in the scenes where he appeared. Makes you consider once more what he did for us, especially when WE should have been the ones dying on that cross. But it was necessary so that WE might live forever. Hard to imagine anyone seeing the movie and still rejecting his sacrifice.

    I saw it twice in theatres and it was pretty sobering. For a movie I found it very profound. I now have a video of my own now, and I think I'll watch it with groups of people at home, and discuss how it strikes each of us at a deeper level. God sure did prove his love for us is Jesus' death on the cross!

    It was a snuff film.

    That being said, I cried like a baby. Because it was so well done.

    Seems to be a recurring theme. Same thing when me and Mrs. wolf went to see it. rcrxs, that scene really got me too.
