computer problem update
bought power supply today 500watt. the guy told me to just plug in the 20 and 4 plug to the motherboard and turn it on.
Well guess what---- it's does the exact same thing except the light doesn't come on in the front of it.
He told me that if it doesn't boot up the the motherboard is fried.

It might be the motherboard. I would take it in to a computer repair place, and see if they can give you a definite answer on whats wrong. That way you won't end up buying more parts than you need. 0 -
the shop charges 25 just to look and 65 to install a motherboard.
now should I pay the 155 for mboard and install or should I pay the 25 to look and make sure and 90 for the motherboard and put in myself.
how hard is changing motherboards?(never done it)0 -
changeing the board out is a piece of cake its plug and play ,so all you have to do is take out the mounting screws and change it. 10 min, take you longer to take the cover off the tower. 0 -
Don't spend the money troubleshooting.
You can get a whiz-bang motherboard for that kind of money.
Place to start would be Frye's. I know...their people are mostly not too bright.

When the PS goes, it can fry the MB. Probably did it as soon as you pushed the button after moving it.
The change in lights prove it was bad, so that is most likely what did it.0 -
you could skip doing the troubleshooting. I'm just trying to save you some headache/money if it turns out that its not the mother board. Though, the chances of that are slim, I can't think of anything else that it could be. 0 -

Point is, he is looking to spend $100+ already to repair the broken one. That leaves $279 more to buy a brand new one with a brand new 19" LCD monitor for a system that will also include a warranty. I don't know how old his current system is but my guess is old enough to break.
He is also f'ing around either replacing crap himself or having the 'TARDS [:0] at compusa doing it. With a new motherboard, there is no guarentee that his O/S will boot to a new system. Yet another variable that won't rear its ugly head until he's $100+ into it.
Realistically, it will cost $200 to fix the old one with a roll of the dice whether it will still work and for who knows how long. For $179 more, he can have a new one. If he does not need the monitor, he can sell it for probably close to $200 by itself. He can also maybe part the old one out for another $50, so he is making $71.00 buying the new Dell.

as i stated before a good ps is very important, and it is 1 part that is highly overlooked, i think i paid 120.00 for mine, the protection circuits are worth their weight in gold

if he tested your ps, and it was ok, a bad cpu will do the exact same thing as you described, and that 2.6 celeron is notorious for ever heating and cooking itself, p4's have an internal sensor that will shut it down when it hits around 85c, celerons do not
i myself would not spend much on it, your paying more for a good socket478 mobo than a new 775 because they are nos, you can get a biostar mobo from newegg for 55 bucks though {probably what he will sell you}, or get a mobo cpu combo for what he wants for just a mobo

edit: only dificult part of installing a mobo is the plugs for the on/off, hd light, etc. don't always match up, and may have to be modified, but not always, i have one from a emachine with cpu you can have, its an intel w/ onboard video/ethernet/4 usb's with a 1.8 celeron0 -

just load it on the chipset, no need to reformat, that was one of the best things about xp when it came out0 -
Before you spend anymore money try one thing. Unplug the harddrive and turn it on and see if it goes further. Same with the ram, and any other drives you may have. One at a time though. If it does go into "POST" during any of these you will have found your problem. 0
