    As was once routine, they approach our forces to cause activation of defensive systems so they can observe our capabilities/procedures and record defensive system emissions for analysis. We also conduct these kinds of missions.

    Unless things have changed we knew they were coming from the time they took off.

    I laughed at people that said the "cold war" was over.
    So Russia fell on some hard times.
    Did they cease to exist?
    They are REBUILDING, and feeling froggy.

    The "cold war" will NEVER be over, unless it turns into a "hot war"

    just think if they would have downed a russian aircraft.
    I dont think the aircraft was as close as everyone thinks
    the Skipper aint about the let his boat be undefended.
    I am not navy, But I spent 23 yrs in the Air Force
    I know that the ship has cap flying all the time.
    it was on radar along time before it got close.
    if the skipper said the word, we would be at a shooting
    war right now. so the skipper knew what was going on.

    When I was on the Ike, we'd have a "Bear" fly over once in a while.

    One time, one of their tin cans got to within a thousand yards of us. We were told that they would go through our trash, so a few of the guys bagged up a bunch of old Playboy mags and heaved them over. You know, just doin' our part for world peace.

    I'm pretty sure its SOP.
    I've seen photos of both Soviet/Russian birds buzzing US ships as well as photos of Soviet ships taken from US birds

    Nothing different today than the 70's when this was routine; except if you compare today's pictures to 70's pictures you'll see the Russians are still flying the same aircraft today while our interceptors have been updated.

    I just posted a reply to the same question? Nothings changed since 1962,( west pact on CVA 61), we did the same to thier ships.
