Has this ever happened to anybody?

Prvi Partizan 5.56 ammunition...

I fired a round and then pulled the trigger again. Nothing happened so I looked at the bolt and it was jammed open about an inch. It wouldn't budge forward or back. Finally, I put the butt on the ground and kicked the bolt open. This is what I found.

The fired round's brass was basically in half and the rear half had been ejected. The remaining portion was still in the barrel and the fresh round was jammed into it.

    [:0]I have never seen anything like that! I'm sure that someone will be able to come along and answer you question, but I just thought I would comment on how bizarre that is.

    In the experts forum one claimed that a friend of his had a M1 Garand that did the same thing but nobody else has seen it or had a very good explanation of how it happened.

    I shot 150 more rounds after this one and nothing like it ever happened again.

    As far as I know it was new brass. I think that maybe some kind of reamer got out of whack and cut a ring inside the brass at that point. When I fired it I think the ejector's force just snapped it at the "ring." I noticed on the other brass I saw that the ejector left a good dent in the brass. I couldn't find the other half of this one though unfortunately.

    I was shooting a Norinco NHM90 in .223.

    the brass broke off at the anneal line.also that unfired round the brass is not fully formed, those together could be the reason. that stuff doesn't look like real good ammo.

    I think that the unfired round is misshapen because it slammed into the partial brass. I also tried to force it forward before I kicked it backward to get it out.

    As far as I know, this is legit military ammunition.

    military ammo will sometimes do this, most times you need a broken shell extractor to get it out, you got lucky[;)] check your headspace

    It's the ammo. Same thing happened to me with some Federal .308. It never happened again after that 20 round box was used up. Federal said it was "incorrect headspace".

    Yes, something similar happened to me in a match last year.
    After firing 5-6 rounds, the Steyr jammed. [:0]
    NEVER done that before.
    Looked around and found the bottom part on the ground, and the top part sticking sideways in the action. Cleared it, started over, finished the stage, came in first on the rifle stage. [;)]

    I have fired a few thousand rounds of this ammo, almost out of it now. Will open up a case of S&B when I run out of this stuff. No problems with S&B in 45.....so far.

    So, do you think that it is just a weakness in the case that breaks when it is ejected or do you think that it cracks when fired?

    It is known as a "Ruptured Cartridge Case". Yes, it happens. Frequently as a result of a boo-boo in the annealing of the brass. The fracture takes place at firing, and is revealed when the base is extracted, leaving the shoulder still sticking to the chamber walls. May also happen when the headspace is WAY off, stretching the brass- but that is usually pretty close to the case head.

    +1 on this info, have seen it several times with incorrectly annealed cases.

    I have heard a lot of bad ju-ju about the Prvi Partizan ammo that has been hitting the market in the past few months.[:(] I personally think it is a lot# issue and/or improperly annealed brass and not so much headspace issue because it seems to be happening to alot of people even with new AR rifles. I know personally a dozen different people that this has happened to at the local range and talked to a couple of them after I had suggested having a smith check head space even on their new rifles and headspace was well in spec. I am surprised that there hasn't been a recall on it yet, atleast not one I have heard about. I have a couple of buddies that have been salvaging the components and scraping the brass. Someone was asking about the 308 brass here awhile back, but I have yet to hear of it doing it yet either. I was going to give some a try but am real skidish about it now.

    Get a broken shell extractor and keep it in your buttstock.
    These failures used to be more common.

    Hell, in my case I just had to jam the next shell forward and it all stuck together

    Case failures in an AR-type are scarey stuff.

    52,000-55,000 lbs. of pressure with an aluminum receiver should make you want to use quality ammo.

    I had that happen to my .50 Ma Deuce, but it was a headspace problem.

    Also had it happen with .223 reloads that had been resized too many times. The cases developed a weak spot that gave way during firing and cut the case.
