Gun shop BS from salesman
I was wandering around a local chain gunshop and was approached by a salesperson. He started showing me the FN rifle that fires the 5.7 caliber round and told me that it was more powerful than a 223 and had more velocity and stopping power. Is this true or was he full of baloney?

More velocity, yes.
More "stopping power" -- which is pretty closely associated with "energy" -- no. The bullets have a lot of speed, but are relatively light weight.
The Secret Service has done testing on this round; I recall reading that their conclusion was that it was about as effective as 9mm, but that was with the AP (armor-piercing) rounds that are not generally available on the civilian market. Expect lower performance when it comes to "stopping power" with the non-AP rounds due to less effective penetration.
I believe the Secret Service is still using the round, the AP rounds are effective against many levels of soft armor, but also, due to their light weight, present minimal "over-penetration" risks -- something the SS needs to be concerned with if they needed to use their weapons with crowds around.0 -
Well, lets look at the ballistics and see:
5.7X28MM:
23Gr FMJ-BT, 2790 FPS, 400 Lbs
5.56X45MM:
55Gr FMJ-BT M193, 3250 FPS, 1325 Lbs
62Gr FMJ-BT M855, 3100 FPS, 1325 Lbs
So the 5.7 shoots a bullet that has 39Gr less weight 310 FPS slower for 925 less lbs of energy and this guy says that it is more powerful? Look like he needs to do some homework.0 -
I don't think they are anywhere near the velocity of a .223.
Don't they only get two-thousand-something feet per second, compared to the ~3,000 fps for .223?0 -
definately full of BS, in fact, the reason no agency picked or stuck to the round is because it had such poor ballistic jelly test performance. 0 -

That "used by the Secret Service" line is being milked for all it's worth. It's true that they use this gun, but have actually purchased only a relative handful.
It's a very specialized application gun for them and the only reason they use it at all is because they're able to carry an exotic and publicly unobtainable round that has the ability to penetrate soft body armor.
For low key VIP protection it puts soft armor penetration capability in a small and somewhat concealable yet high capacity package. If it weren't for these characteristics they wouldn't be using this round at all.
For the general public the FN Five-Seven is really not much more than a high capacity .22 Magnum pistol that fires terribly expensive ammunition. It's grip size actually makes it pretty large for a CCW gun, but the gee-whiz factor outweighs this with some folks.0 -
also the 5.7 round the "secret service" uses is not hte 5.7 pistol but hte ps 90 carbine in full auto. tim, the fast talking fn rep at all the dealer shows talked about that and never said anything about them using the pistol. still a neat little round though. 0 -
