Brakes on a Chevy Colorado

Have any of you guys had experience with the rear brakes on a Chevy Colorado? I've got a friend who's out of state with one, and she's having some trouble. The rear brakes are shot at 14,000 miles, and the dealer wants $1100 to replace them. Supposedly the brakes are only covered up to 12,000 miles. She's been told that a special tool is needed to disassemble them, and that no local shop can do the work. Is this true?

    Has she actually spoken to another shop, preferably someone who specializes in brakes. I find it hard to believe that the brakes went out at 12,000 miles, and the dealer is the only one who can fix it, and that brakes on one axle could ever cost $1100. What state is she in? My brother works at Les Schwab, in fact he manages the brake shop, so I can ask him. What year is it?

    I can't imagine any way that normal use would have worn rear brakes out in 11K miles.

    Did she leave the parking brake on?

    Does it have 4 wheel disc or rear drum? Did she call MIDAS? I always do my own brakes, but where my ex wife was concerned I took her car to MIDAS. That way they get the bitchin' and not me.

    The truck is a 2007. She's in MS, and I'm in MO, so there's no way I can look at it. She swears that she's never used the park brake, and that she doesn't drive with both feet. It gets used to run a mail route, and the dealer is claiming that she uses the brakes excessively. They're claiming that the brakes are so worn that the wheel cylinders came apart, and that the drums are destroyed.

    I don't know about the qualifications of the shop she spoke with, but she has talked with a local mechanic, who said he wouldn't touch it.

    My 2006 Colorado appears to have regular drum brakes on the rear. I don't immediately see anything weird about the set-up. Tell her to try another garage. The Colorado is actually an Isuzu 280 so she might try that dealership, too.

    The brakes should not be shot after so few miles. Unless she doesn't release the parking brake while driving, or something. I have 75,000 on mine and the brakes seem fine.

    Could be crooked mechanics trying to cheat a woman driver.

    Driving a mail route, yes her brakes can be gone in 14,000 miles. But I have seen these vehicles in the garage that does my work and they have done brakes on them. When delivering mail you don't count mileage for brake wear, you count stops per day, and if she delivers like me her brakes are shot.
