    I have a buddy that has govt. clearance for that satellite that Google uses..... you only know a part of what they can see of you.... scary stuff man..... they can literally read a penny on the road.... I have seen it myself..... just remember that the govt knows more about you then you know about yourself.

    Sorry. I just don't believe it. I believe satellite imagery may be approaching 1 meter (appx. 3 feet) resolution, but I don't believe it's there yet. Reading a penny on the pavement will one day be possible, but I don't believe were there yet.

    Spurge, don't know about the penny, but APPROACHING one meter resolution? Sorry bro- DigitalGlobe is SELLING 100 MM resolution photos. Not Big Brother- Big Business!

    Let me see if I have this straight; your 'buddy' used his security clearance to show you, an individual presumably without a need to know or the proper clearance, a realtime satellite image at a classified resolution level??? Now that is scarey!

    When, not if, but when his superiors learn of this your 'buddy' may be looking at a very long all expenses paid stay in a not so nice govt. hotel and it won't be Club Fed either.

    Wow. I did mis-speak when I said we weren't to 1 M resolution yet (I was aware we were), but you're telling me we're at 10 cm resolution? Ok, so things have progressed a little faster than I anticipated since I last looked into what kind of imagery was available. And I'm off by a factor of 10. Hmmmmmmm, if 10cm resolution is available commercially, I might have to re-think my claims about penny resolution (appx 2cm resolution) for the military being unlikely.

    Anyway, thanks for that.

    Straight from DigitalGlobes website...

    Highest resolution sensors available commercially

    60 cm (2 ft) panchromatic at nadir
    2.4 m (8 ft) multispectral at nadir

    The 10cm info you're hearing possibly refers to 10cm per pixel, which is entirely different. That's just enough to determine if what you're seeing is even a human.

    Take into account too that when this sort of resolution is used the field of view becomes extremely small, somewhere in the range of only 150-200 sq. yards. Consider too the very limited amount of time these satellites are over a given area each day. When used for commercial purposes time isn't an issue. Intel work is a different animal.

    OK, I'll buy that the government can read a penny on the road....but can they get the DNA off of it from there???

    I mean, we all know if you've handled a penny, the government has your DNA. That's not tin foil hat stuff there, that's just reality.

    I would venture to guess that you would need approximately 1mm resolution to read a penny. Something tells me that physics will prevent this from ever being possible. 1mm at 220km is an angle of 0.00000026 degrees. The distortion of the lights path due to earth's atmosphere would have to make this kind of resolution impossible.

    Satellite imagery may only be to the 1 meter range but aerial imagery can be in the sub meter range.
    I have seen aerials that you could make out manholes in the road.
