Anyone into Metal Detecting?

Just purchased my first metal detector. I have a buddy that is into it, so he'll show me the ropes. Anyone at GB into MDing?

    ..Not to draw away from a discussion, but....click on "search" up in the corner and type in "metal detector." Quite a few threads there.

    I just purchased mine today too. Not planning on getting rich, just a pastime and find lost arrows etc. Bought a Fisher F4

    I got a cheap one a while ago - that durn thing has more than paid for itself - at kite festivals, pins fall off and instantly get lost in the sand - found with the detector...

    While camping, Daughter lost the keys in tall grass - found!

    Power to house went off, but only to one phase (half of the circuits) - traced the power cables from the powermeter in the front yard to the house - detector saved me a lot of digging!

    I'm in the heart of civil War territory. Still plenty of bullets and other items out there to dig up. Let us know what you find.

    There are quite a few relic hunter forums as well. Try typing in the American Relic Hunters Association. One guy there about two weeks ago found a penny worth roughly $35,000.

    its real big buisness here, for gold hunting!...and the law is, you pay a small fee for a prospecting licence, and what you find is yours...and no tax on selling gold here!..i know quiet a few people who have bought a new detector, and on their first day using them theyve got very very rich....they are a lot of fun.

    I bought a Garrett Ace 250 to start out with. I want to make sure I'll stick with it before spending the big bucks. Also got a pinpointer.

    Not looking to get rich either, but I do enjoy finding coins and trinkets.[:D]

    it's my next hobby after guns so far i have found 2 gold teeth and about 500 coins and a bunch of junk lol my daughter found a 14k ring and we use cheap bounty hunter detectors

    I get the bug every so often. I usually buy a machine off Ebay, use it on vacation, then sell it when I get home.

    Yep I have a Whites XLT. I do Beach hunting after big summer holidays and areas around me that have old logging camps that are long forgotten.

    I am sure you are aware, but be careful around Indian burial sites, State and Federal parks. Ask before you hunt and dig the fines can be quite steep.

    ..I got the bug a while back, but didn't want to spend big bucks at first, so I bought a Bounty Hunter "Quick Silver." I know it's a mid low end unit, but can someone with experience tell me if it's good enough for a beginner, or will it frustrate me? All I've done with it is coin shoot in my driveway.

    Yeah, I'm into metal detecting. More like low-metallic AT and AP mines though. I like finding them with AN/PSS-12s and 14s better than with personnel and equipment.

    Of course the best way to get rid of 'em is with MCLC. ~1750 lb of C-4 on a rope.

    Peon- You will like that pin pointer. I have yet to get one, (one of my hunting buddy's has one). Tell ya some of the best coin finds we have had were in yards of old homes. We had one last summer we did for a friend. Three of us sweeped his yard and came up with a small jar of silver coins from circa 1920's or so based on rumor from the owners.

    I am not a coin expert, but the rush of finding something thats been forgotten about and finding it is all the fun! Happy hunting![^]
