I've only met them twice. Once when they were kicking my ass and about 12 other peoples. The other time at an EasyRider rodeo at the OC Fairgrounds seemed like a good group of guys to party with.

I can say that I have met a few and they are fairly tough hombres, though most of the real ones are in social security country if not on the wrong side of the grass.
I once rode with a group of Apaches, a gang from Oklahoma City, from the State Fair in Springfield, to St. Louis. At that time (mid-60s) the highways was two lane and went through a number of small towns. We were escorted from one end of town through to the other by Illinois State Troopers and if gas was needed, there was a single designated station we were allowed to stop at. It created a real "us and them" feeling, even though these outlaws were just a group we fell in with riding home. By and large they were pretty ordinary, if hard partying blue collar guys. Bike mechanics among other occupations. While at the fair I did encounter outlaws from several different gangs (the fair was heavy on bike races then). I saw Hell's angels drinking Jack Black and using vodka as a chaser. Way better drinkers than I ever was or ever will be. There was a lot of criminal enterprise and drug dealing among the Hell's Angels in those and subsequent years, but we all grew up with at least one kid that could have become one.0 -

Hells Angels had their international convention in my town a year ago (a town with a pop. of 8,000). Police overreacted I think, but a strong police presence probably kept things reasonably quiet.
The Hells Angels is now an organized crime cartel, mostly dealing in street drugs. Most are addicts. They looked old and lost to me, but I don't feel sorry for them. Bunch of losers who like to look and act tough. Not the reckless rebels of 50 years ago. Mafia on wheels.0 -

The Hells Angels (81) of the past own big businesses, are family men, and lived by the code "Dont give none" Dont take none" I rode with Some of them years ago also with the Outlaws. The showed respect for others when others showed respect for them..
There were a few bands of Clubs that give the rest a bad rep, some were Hells Angels, but most of it was hype caused by the media..0 -

Over the years from the 50's on the 'club 'scene has slowly matured into hard working motorcycle enthusiasts , who together run compident bussnesses for both them selves & as a club..
They are mainly well established, there are some who '10 men' attitude
(especially amongst the prospects) that may ruin there persona.
but , all the guys i knew & still do, are ruthless, individuals who will tear ya head off & poo down the hole, if upset.....just like any one else!!

I have met some, years ago, along with some Banditos, Brothers Fast, Iron Horsemen, Son's of Silence, as well as others. If they were on a "club sponsored event" you didn't really want to mess with them. They had an "image" to uphold, and they did it well. There was always a "brotherhood" ideal, that you could not get around. Some wore this persona 100% of the time, while others, when you got them off on their own, you would not have been able to tell them from any of your other friends.
Of course you do have to take into consideration the kinds of friends you had at the time. If your friends were the short hair, executive types, in three piece suits.......well....[;)][B)][:D]0 -
Back in the day I was drinking buddies with several members of the Outlaws. They have a sizable presence in the local bar scene. Never had any problems with them. 0 -
Generally speaking, unless you're affiliated with another club the patched members of the major ones won't cause you any problem if you don't mess with them first. It's their prospects and members of smaller outfits you have to watch out for. They're prone to jumping at any opportunity to prove themselves.
The large clubs aren't in it to just tear around the countryside raising hell anymore. Not that they don't party pretty hard in public, but they're always quietly concerned with "business" considerations. Patched members normally don't want to draw unnecessary heat by jacking up civilians for no reason. Like was said, you probably won't even be aware most are members in their daily affairs.
You should NEVER think these major club's members are just average joes because they seemed pretty cool when you bumped into them along the way. As has been said, they're organized crime outfits that are heavily involved in all kinds of dirty deeds. They just have enough sense to stay cool unless provoked. However, if this happens the SOP is to handle things very decisively.0 -
I knew a Pagan from my home town. Also knew two Pagans who were going to community college when I went. They were on study release from the state pen. They were great guys and I considered them friends, but they had a short fuse. Both were Viet Nam vets. 0 -

I knew one. He was a really great guy as long as you didn't cross him. Only one person I knew of did cross him -- he checked out early. That was a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. I can't say I really miss the time or the place. 0 -
I met this one guy when I was 14 yrs old. He had a tattoo on his shoulder that said hells angels. He claimed he used to be with them. His voice was very raspy due to someones fist punching him in the throat. And that was the way it healed. I guess he had some damage done. He just looked like a washed up old fighting dog. 0 -

We had two members in my home town when I was growing up.One died in a car wreck.The other one now much older builds hot rods and sells them to pay the bills.I also have a photo of about 200 members taking a break along the side of the road.At least half of them are flipping me off in the picture.

The pagans were bigger up by me and I happened to know one of the top guys thankfully, and yes... some of both the pagans and the hells angels were as nasty as people say they are.. some just act it (They're the ones you worry about, they have something to prove) Most of them are so far "Gone" now that they aren't much to worry about. 0 -
I saw HAs on the highway from time to time when I lived in CA but have never met one.
Had a little run-in with another club (damned if I can recall the name after 30+ years) when I was working as a bouncer in a bar. They started coming in the bar in 2s and 3s and behaved themselves. Then on Saturday about 40 of them showed up and all Hell broke loose. There were at least 3 fights (luckily no weapons) and one idiot came careening down the street on his chopper tanked up on booze and crashed into the row of parked bikes. Quite a scene. I guess they would have killed him if he hadn't been one of them. At some point I checked out front and biggest one (had "Sergeant at Arms" on his colors) was having sexual intercourse on the sidewalk with one of the women who came with the guys. A lot of class, there.
At closing time they refused to leave. Someone cut the phone line and I genuinely feared someone was going to get hurt or killed. Another employee slipped out the back door and used a neighbor's phone while the bartender and I armed ourselves with 1911 Colts. We also had a short Mossberg pump behind the bar. When the dispatcher told our colleague that help was 20 minutes away he replied that we would have to shoot some of them before then. At the mention of "shooting" the dispatcher got all excited and 4 B&Ws showed up within 5 minutes. The cops strolled in and announced the bar was closed. The bikers left quietly.
The next time a couple of them showed up the new "No Colors" sign was on the door and they went elsewhere.
I know they were just looking for a good time but their idea of fun can get a little out of hand.0 -
I always found the idea of renegade biker gangs wholly laughable.
Knightrider: "Hey, lets get high and do some crimes."
Toecutter: "Yeah, let's go get sushi and not pay."
Knightrider: "Yeah, we'll wear our colors in there and rev our bikes in the parking lot afterwards."
Toecutter: "Yeah!"
Knightrider: "The fugu better be fresh tonight, or we're gonna kick some ass!"
Toecutter: "Yeah!"
Knightrider: "Yeah!"
