    what weapon system would've been used on the go-fast boats?

    Ma-Deuce? 20mm cannon? Some missle?

    seems like either the SM-2 or the Harpoon would be overkill (even if they can engagefrom that short range)
    R2D2 (Phalanx CIWS 20mm) would make short work of an overrated motorboat

    Let's see, we're in a war torn area, suffering the loss of several thousand brave men and women in combat and these fools don't have enough respect for the U.S. to avoid doing something like this, my question is...."where have we failed?" I don't believe we should use unnecessary force but in this clearly a "tense" and war riddled region of the globe. If they don't have any other reason to respect our warships, they should be given one....... In this case, I would have employed, the "BOOM", halt or I'll shoot" philosophy. This is nuts to let them do this without cost. What if they're testing our resolve to STOP them and the next boats are loaded with high explosives?? It's a little late to react with the blow the bow off one of our ships....... everyone in that part of the world does not want to be our ally should fear our presence, gun boats fast approaching is not trying to win our favor....... BOOM, or at the very least let the gunner's mates have some fun with those radar controlled Gatling guns.

    Is there any indication that they are really Iranian military boats? One report said something about having a maching gun mounted on one - so what. And that they were sitting low in the water like they were loaded with explosives - again, big deal. Where is the Iranian flag, or markings that indicate it is a military vehicle?

    The question is really - in typical middle eastern fashion, what's to keep any of the radicals from getting any old boat, loading it with explosives, and attacking a US vessel? I agree that whoever is in charge over there showed tremendous restraint not blowing them out of the water, but in an environment where the enemy rarely identifies themselves, why take that chance?

    I agree with rythym guy...remember the USS Cole?

    At a minimum, warning shots should've been fired across their bow with a .50cal. Those boats looked too close for comfort.

    What I don't understand is that the Coast Guard, when persuing drug smuggling vessels that refuse to stop, fire warning shots across the bow first. If they still don't stop, then shots are fired towards the stern to disable the engines.

    Yet, the Navy in a war zone full of suicide radical bombers chose to take no action.

    Thats what Iran wants us to do "Shoot" Then they get to make a media mockery of the USA.

    I can see the headlines now, "Fleet of heavy US Navy ships fire upon unarmed Iranian fishing Boat" Then our own media will play it up even more. Something like "Battle ships and missile cruisers take on mistaken Iranian race boat team."
