Ordered a new dell computer couple days ago and they charged me tax on a computer shipping out of Kentucky. Told me they had to because they shipped so many that the government makes them.[?][?]

    This is not unheard of. Some companies do this, but they HAVE to pay the sales tax to your state.

    If Dell has one of their stores in your state, then you must pay sales tax to them even if you order from their Austin HQ. Also, now that Dell is selling retail in Staples and Best Buy stores this may up the number of states Tax is owed in.

    We have to charge sales tax on any sales in a state we have a store in.

    Lots of out-of-state companies have to collect sales tax for the state where the item is shipped. Sears, for instance. If I order something from Sears, and it is shipped from Illinois to Texas, they will collect Texas state sales tax. Why? Because Sears has retail outlets in Texas.

    To beat the sales tax on mail order purchases, you have to buy from a company that has no retail outlet in your state.

    Didn't think about them selling them in stores now. BTW you can't buy one with XP from any of the stores around here, (Best Buy, Wal Mart). I didn't want Vista and Dell was the only brand that still offered XP.

    CHEATED Yes. The real question is by who. If Dell keeps the tax then Dell cheated you. If Dell is forced to collect the tax and turn it over to the state then the state cheated you.
