Does AVG...

Permanently deleted user
run on it's own in the background to detect viruses or does it only work when you run a scan??? I'm not sure about this, but I thought Norton was always running.?.?

The reason I ask is b/c it found a Trojan in system back up...???...whatever that means. It only found it when I ran a scan...

    Normally on my system it scans your hard drive once a day. Usually when you boot up. It will go out and update itself (with your permission) every day. You will have to turn off the windows firewall because the two conflict.

    AVG defaults to continuously running in the background, but can be turned off for doing manual scans. Norton and McAfee have the highest overhead on computer resources. I dumped Norton for Avast Antivirus, but AVG is also highly rated.

    AVG runs in the background,.......but would only pick up something like you refer to on a manual scan Eric.
    It is active looking for all incoming threats, but if you had one in a restore file prior to instaliing, it would do what you experienced.

    Edit: the "whatever that means" part of your post is this,.......it found a virus embedded in one of your Windows restore points,......thats all!

    Dumped Norton for BitDefender.

    Dumped BitDefender for AVG....

    Dumped AVG for Kaspersky...

    Dumped Kaspersky for AVAST...


    AVAST RULES !!!

    and it's free...

    If you want a good simple antivirus with a high rating - AVAST is the way.

    Avast takes less space than AVG and runs smoother.


    Run Avast with for instance ZoneAlarm (firewall-program) - and you're really well protected - FOR FREE !!
