It's heavily edited before it airs. I think they get 20 to 30 hours of tape that they cut to 30 to 20 minutes for a half hour show. Still like to watch it, especially when it's based in cities that i know well. 0 -

I dont think any of the segments I have seen on COPS are staged. However, that "Sheriff John Brunell" guy started his own series similiar to COPS and he admitted using staged scenarios.0 -
Reminds me of a friend long ago, got pulled over. Cop told him to "walk the line" he said sure and did it on his hands.
Cop gave him a DUI for being a smart azz.
He was very good at walking on his hands. Did it all the time for long distances. So it was a piece of cake while drunk too.[:D]0 -
My favorite Cops episode is when a man is pulled over, exits the car, and the officer begins to question the driver if there is any narcotics in the car. The driver says "no", and the officer asks the driver if he would like to know why he has reason to believe there may be marijuana in the car..."yes" the driver says. The officer then grabs a joint the driver had tucked above his ear in plain view. All the driver could manage to say is "AHH, Your good!!" 0 -

I don't believe the scenarios on COPS are staged for a couple of reasons. Primarily they may looked staged because most of us don't want to believe people are that stupid. Well, some of them are. The technical aspects of the show can create a staged feel. Editing is difficult with hours and hours of video taken just to get a 30/60 minutes show. Also, fairly recent laws restricting the media's access into private residents can make continuity a problem. Another problem that adds to it is the actions of the officers. Pushing the bounds of what is acceptable or good police work to help the videographers get good footage seemed to be the norm. I cringed a lot watching that show. If my officers had done some of the things I saw the officers on COPS do, we would have had a serious come to Jesus meeting. While I never had COPS in my town, media ride-a-longs were frequent. Finding an officer that was active enough to allow them a chance at some interesting calls wasn't hard. Finding one that could do it and not embarrass us was a challenge. 0 -
