What's it take to be a cop?
What are the requirements for being a cop?
Education, Work history, physical requirements, age limits, etc, etc.
Anything else I may have left out.

Police recruiters tell me that they are having an increasingly harder time trying to find qualified and ETHICAL applicants. The qualified part is easy. It's finding ethical people who are also qualified that's tough. 0 -
Hell, come work with me. Less pay, longer hours, and you get to sleep on the ground. [8D] 0 -
In Michigan, High School Diploma. Associates degree or better preferred but not required.
Must be a US citizen at least 18 years old. Many departments require you to be at least 21 but Detroit PD used to hire at 18.
Must have vision correctable to 20/20.
Must pass hearing test.
Many departments require drug tests and physcological testing.
Be of good character, No felony convictions. Serious misdemeanors weigh heavily against you. Must have a valid drivers license. A good driving record and good credit rating is important as well.
Ability to pass required written and physical agility tests. There's more-

Oh, and having integrity helps-a lot.
I enjoyed my career. I was glad to get in and glad to get out. I always enjoyed the work and dealing with the public but the last 6 years, I didn't enjoy it nearly as much but it was more the general atmosphere than the public I worked for. Michigan is going through some tough times and the state is suffering from some pretty severe economic woes.
The good news is the governor just announced that she will allocate funding for 100 new troopers, but many of the local agencies now pay much better than the state.0 -
It takes an ego (or inferiority complex, so being a cop is to compensate), and a disregard for the law.
By the law, I mean the constitution, of course.0 -

Please don't do it. I have read you posts and seen your pictures and I have come to the conclusion that you are not that type of person. If you do this you will become that type of person after a while and I don't think it will look good on you. JMHO. Please don't take offense. Been there, seen it done a hundred times.0 -

I'm Traci. Your thinking Gagirl. I've been doing alot of strength training for tri-atlons this year. I've gain alot of upper body strength to help me in Kayaking. I'm in the best physical shape of my life. I can run, bike, swim and kayak/canoe stronger than I ever have.
I love people and I have a love for my town I couldn't even begin to tell you about.
I love guns/shooting. It seems the more I learn about the hobby, the more I love it. I can shoot very well long range and I'm getting fairly good with my pistol shooting.
I can drive the wheels of almost anything. No surprise I grew up around racing.
I would have trouble hurting or shooting anybody.
I'm friends with the cops in the neighborhood and I think they do a job that most of us couldn't do.
I'm not saying I want to be a cop. I'm just curious about what it take to be one. I may or may not decide to. This isn't something I'll jump into.0 -
There has been alot of "advice" given, but do me a favor. Listen to the people who actually know what it takes and know what it is really like to wear a badge, Not people who obviously have a disrepect or disdain for LEO's for whatever their reason may be. And they have a right to voice their opinion, that's what I love about this country. 0 -

I know there are alot of cop haters out there. Just like there are bad cops out there.
I don't hate the group because of a few bad cops. I've had a time or two that I've need help from cops and I got that help. They didn't do it for no other reason, than it was just their job. They didn't know me, they didn't want anything from me, but to help me.
I've been in trouble a time or two with the law and I've had speeding tickets.
But I'm not going and bash cops for something I'm to blame for in the first place. People can say what they want. I for one will always appreicate our law enforcement0 -

When I hired on the job over 30 yrs ago, I met with the Chief. He had a statement he made to all new hires.
It went something like this... " I expect you to treat everyone with dignity and respect until they demonstrate to you otherwise.... then treat them accordingly" .... It made sense to me.
Police work is an exciting and rewarding field. Some people will not like you , but many more will.0
