BERKELEY, Calif. - Two weeks after the Berkeley City Council called U.S. Marine Corps recruiters "uninvited and unwelcome intruders," the council is expected to reconsider its anti-Marine stance Tuesday night.
Large crowds from the left and right are mobilizing for the meeting. The anti-war feminist group Code Pink began a 24-hour "peace-in" Monday night, and the pro-war group Move America Forward planned a day-long demonstration outside City Hall.
The Rev. Fred Phelps, the anti-gay activist and founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, will be there as well, demonstrating against both the Marines and Code Pink. Members of the Westboro Baptist Church routinely picket at the funerals of American soldiers killed in action.
Code Pink activist Zanne Joi said her group is "supporting the troops by being against war and against recruiting."
"It's because we care about these people that we are standing up against the war machine," Joi said.
On Jan. 29, the city council approved a resolution that included letters to the Marines advising them that their recruiting station is unwelcome in Berkeley. It also called for an investigation into whether the U.S. military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy for homosexuals violated city anti-discrimination policy.

These are the words issued to our brave men and women of the Armed Forces.
Not by Iraq ... Iran ... or China. I'm talking about right here in the United States of America.
At a time when our military men and women need our support more than ever, the City of Berkeley, California, has insulted the U.S. Marines.
Do not allow this anti-military, anti-America sentiment to pervade! Give generously to help the ACLJ fight this outrageous position by supporting proposed federal legislation, the Semper Fi Act of 2008.
You may remember the Berkeley of the 60s. Their vehement opposition of the Vietnam War - complete with sit-ins and heated protests - has gone down in history.
Now they are at it again. In a disgusting display of activism, the Berkeley City Council voted to send a letter to the U.S. Marines telling them that their recruiting office in the city was no longer welcome.
The City Council also outrageously labeled Marine recruiters ... the very men and women who serve our nation during this time of war and put their lives on the line for our freedoms ... as ''uninvited and unwelcome intruders.''
The Council empowered a radical protest organization - voting to give the group, Code Pink, space outside the recruitment office and urging them to ''impede, passively or actively,'' the work of the recruiters.
As a freedom-loving citizen of the United States ... and an active member of the ACLJ ... I strongly urge you to show your support of our esteemed military and give generously online to ensure that our military gets the support and respect it deserves.
Make no mistake, the disturbing radical trend is spreading. Just days after this shameful scenario took place in Berkeley, the Mayor of Toledo, Ohio, followed suit.
He pulled the plug on a military training exercise scheduled in Toledo - just hours before it was to begin - saying the Marines should leave his town because ''they frighten people.''
At best, this kind of action is nothing more than hostile liberal activism; at worst, it is an egregious violation of our military's freedom - a freedom they have so proudly fought to secure.
I have instructed the ACLJ's legal and legislative teams to fully engage in this issue immediately. Our Government Affairs Office in Washington, D.C., is already at work in support of strong federal legislation, the Semper Fi Act of 2008, introduced by Senator Jim DeMint.
It would effectively disperse federal funding earmarked for Berkeley - and hand it over to our U.S. Marines instead. With your help, we will push this legislation forward ... and take radical, anti-military rhetoric to task.
Please give generously online to help the ACLJ launch a nationwide campaign via Internet and radio to see momentum gained on the Semper Fi Act of 2008.
Our message to liberal politicians and leftist activists will reverberate loud and clear: Your insulting actions are not welcome here.
